Wingate & Finchley 1-2 BSFC

Wingate & Finchley 1-2 Bishop’s Stortford Match Report 22/10/19

Bishop’s Stortford made it two wins in a row under Jamie Cureton with a hard fought 1-2 win away to Wingate and Finchley.

The hosts – who before this match had only scored six goals this campaign and sit 21st in the league – conceded two early goals from Ryan Henshaw and Shomari Barnwell before Tommy Tejan-Sie pulled one back before the break.

Tanasheh Abrahams had the first chance of the match, volleying over the bar from the edge of the box, before Jordan Chiedozie skied his effort at the other end.

Henshaw broke the deadlock with a looping header back across goal from Alfie Mason’s wide free kick on the 11th minute, before Barnwell doubled the lead just two minutes later when he dribbled from the halfway-line and curled his shot in at the far post.

Ryan Charles had a good chance to make it three with a close-range header, before Shane Gore in the Wingate goal did well to smother the ball when Charles took a heavy touch in the box.

Tejan-Sie scored just after the half-hour mark, when he tapped in from close range after a good cross from the left.

Goalkeeper Fred Burbidge, was in action a minute later to pull off a save at full stretch before Mark Haines cleared the follow-up effort off the line.

After the break, the hosts dominated and will be left wondering how they didn’t equalise or even score a winner.

First Burbidge did well to hold a long range effort, before Abrahams volleyed wide.

Ifil and substitute Michael-Percil were dominant down the right, creating chance after chance, but Burbidge and the defence were equal to it all.

Henshaw had the only chance for the Blues in the second half, with a diving header from a free kick that Gore did well to tip over the bar.

Burbidge was needed again to parry a long range effort, then in the dying minutes he made a brilliant double stop to prevent the equaliser.

The Blues stay in 13th in the BetVictor Isthmian Premier League, while Wingate and Finchley are only being kept off the bottom off the table by Corinthian Casuals, who travel to the Prokit UK Stadium on Tuesday 29 October after the visit of Enfield Town in the FA Trophy on 26 October.
