When Blues ruled Europe

Fifty-two years ago today Blues faced their first game outside the UK when they travelled to Germany to face Stortford’s twin towns, Friedberg and Villiers sur Marne.

The visit proved to be a successful one as the home side were beaten 4-0 before the following day saw Stortford beat Villiers sur Marne 2-0. For a full report click here

The following year it was Stortford’s turn to host the towns, and Blues went goal crazy with 17 in two games. The French side were hammered 7-1 on May 27, 1967, before Friedberg suffered an even bigger defeat the following day as Stortford ran out 10-0 winners.

There didn’t appear to any twinning games the following season – possibly because the Europeans didn’t appreciate being hammered – but Blues still found time to jump on a ferry to Hollands and recorded a 3-0 win at Hillegom FC on June 1, 1968, before making it six wins from six against Continental with a 2-1 victory at SDW Amsterdam 1 two days later.
