Blues Youth 5 Braintree Town 1 – full report

Blues’ FA Youth Cup team marched into the third qualifying round of the competition with a fine win over local rivals Braintree Town, on Thursday evening

Goals from Marcus Crowther (pen), Jacob Bennett, Louie Johnson, Tolu and Rhys Haupt sent Stortford into the final stage before Football League teams enter the competition

Blues will now travel to Barnet on a date to be announced.

The Blues made the most of a confident start going ahead in the 10th minute. Skipper Ethan Barton slipped the ball through the middle for Bennett to fire low and wide of keeper Connor Hardy from 25 yards.

The lead was doubled five minute later as a long clearance upfield from keeper Jarvis Monk saw Jack Walker released on the left and when he cut into the box Iron defender Jack Martin brought him down. Crowther made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Stortford went close to adding to their lead before the break but the visitors, managed by former Blues favourite Aiden Palmer, were increasingly coming more into the picture.

The Essex side hade the slight edge in the early part of the second half but fell further behind in the 53rd minute as Johnson intercepted a pass on the left and went on a 50 yard run before cutting inside to shoot low into the far corner.

Braintree pulled a goal back in the 69th minute after keeper Jarvis Monk slipped to allow substitute Edwardo Vaquel to run the ball into an empty net

Just when the visitors looked to getting on top the Blues notched a fourth goal in the 75th minute. A deep free-kick from Bennett on the left in towards the box was met by a header from Barton and when the ball ran loose to Osiyemi the substitute, who had only been on the pitch for a couple of minutes, struck a low shot on the turn from just inside the area past keeper Hardy.

Bennett was close to adding another goal and then in the second minute of stoppage time Hardy failed to hold a straight forward effort from Barton and another substitute, Rhys Haupt, scored into an empty net from close range.

The result took the Blues through to the next round where they will be away to Vanarama National League Barnet.    Â
