Andrew Cornell look back at Blues’ games on October 15th

It didn’t take long to decide which match to write about for this article. 20 years ago today we crushed Letchworth Town 10-1 in a Herts Senior Cup first round game. It was only the Herts Senior Cup and it was only Letchworth, but how many times do we reach double figures?

Blues were having a moderate start to the season, placed 17th in the Isthmian Premier Division after 10 games and already out of the FA Cup after a 3-0 defeat at Boston United but Letchworth were weak opposition and a win was expected. Stortford started as though they were expecting a tough game and went at the visitors from the start with Will Cooper putting us in front with his first shot on two minutes from a Roy Parkyn cross. Sometimes it seems as though a goal too early can make the team relax and get complacent but not this time. Five minutes later Craig Ravenscroft beat the offside trap to make it 2-0. After that we did relax a little and there were no more goals in the first half hour. Then Ian Hollamby found himself unmarked and headed in from a Parkyn corner. On the stroke of half time a great through ball from Andy Walker saw Henry make it 4-0 and conclusively wrap up the game as a contest.

Sometimes this would then mean a few substitutions and a slow paced/boring second half as both teams try to get to full time without any mishaps. This game had two substitutions AND three goals in the first five minutes of the second half. On 47 minutes Ravenscroft passed to Cooper who scored his second goal. Kevin Riley then came on as sub and within 30 seconds beat 3 defenders to score the 6th goal. A minute later Mark Lampty scored a consolation goal for Letchworth from 12 yard before Jon Hooker came on for Cooper. Just after the hour, the third sub Scott Forbes made it 7-1. Two minutes later Walker beat 4 defenders before scoring via a deflection to make it 8-1. On 78 minutes Ravenscroft got his 2nd and Stortford’s 9th from another deflection and on the stroke of full time Forbes scored his second with a great volley as Blues made it to double figures. Not a significant result but great entertainment for all who were there.

In contrast, a year ago we travelled to Maidenhead United in Conference South last season and despite a host of changes under new bosses Steve Smith and Mark Hawles we were hammered 6-0

Also on this day we have twice played FA Cup matches on this date, beating Burnham 5-2 two years ago and losing 5-3 to Hendon 25 years ago.
