Blast from the past

Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on October 7th

A recent game on this date was in 2003 in our last Isthmian League season when we visited Bedford Town. It was exactly a quarter of the way through the season and the home side had started better than us. The Eagles were seventh in the table while Blues were in 18th place, needing to pick up some points to get into the qualification positions for the first Conference South season.

Blues were unbeaten in three games though, so better form was clearly on the way. The home team started stronger though as an early poor clearance from Gareth Gwillim went to French who fortunately shot straight at Micky Desborough. There was another chance for Folds shortly after but he shot wide as Stortford weathered the storm. Blues came into the game without looking dangerous as the half went on but almost had a nasty shock when Roberts found French on 35 minutes. Once again the Bedford striker’s shot was straight at Desborough. As half time arrived at 0-0 the visitors, although not outplayed would have been happier with the scoreline.

Stortford looked more confident after the break and had early chances through James Bunn which came to nothing. Their defence was looking solid now with Darren Wiltshire playing well and Bedford were either shooting wide or getting nowhere in the air. With the score at 0-0 approaching the last quarter of an hour a draw was looking likely when Blues scored the goal their improving performance deserved. Bunn took the ball off Bedford captain Howarth before finding Glen Southam in the box. Southam made no mistake with his shot to put Stortford in the lead. Soon after the lead was doubled when a half clearance was returned to the box by Tim Langer and Bunn got to it first to score his first goal for Blues. Lynch wasted a chance for Bedford before Langer scored the third goal in the 85th minute from a Gwillim corner. A flattering scoreline but a deserved result from a Blues team who improved as the game went on.

The previous game on this date saw us beat Boreham Wood 4-0 at home in 2000, so we can but hope that the run continues. The most notable debut on this date was Lincoln Manderson who played 98 games for Blues starting with a home game against Aylesbury United on this date.
