Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on January 6th

We haven’t played on this date since 2004 when we played Watford in a Herts Senior Cup game. Watford fielded a reserve team with little or no first team experience – but that made for a very closely matched game and entertaining for the few spectators present.

It seemed Watford had unerestimated Blues when the home side took the lead after only six minutes. Carl Drew dropped a header at the feet of Glen Southam who volleyed past Richard Lee in the Watford goal. Almost immediately Watford had the ball in the net through Blizzard, however the Watford player was ruled offside.

A legitimate equaliser came in the 17th minute When Gary Fisken played a long ball to Ashley Young who ran at the home defence and then shot past Mickey Desborough.

Only three minutes later Blues had the lead again. Dave Rainford passed to Southam on the edge of the box and the Stortford player wasted no time in scoring his and the team’s second goal. There was a penalty shout when Roy Essandoh was brought down but the referee had already awarded an offside earlier in the move. From that free kick Watford found Jason Norville who shot past Desborough and so at half-time the scores were level at 2-2.

Early in the second half Watford hit the post through Young but on the hour mark Blues took the lead yet again. Carl Drew who was making his first start was playing well and headed home an Allman free kick for the third goal. Blues seemed to hold on to this lead fairly comfortably until 10 minutes from the end when they gave away an equaliser. Substitute keeper Richard Hayward gave the ball away from a back pass and Elliott Godfrey took the ball round him to coolly score Watford’s third goal.

There were no goals in extra time and Watford eventually won it on penalties.

The most recent league game on this date was in 1996 when we faced Yeovil Town at Rhodes Avenue. We had gained a surprise 3-1 win at Yeovil earlier in the season but were unable to complete the double. The Somerset side took the lead in the 18th minute through Grazioli who beat Gavin King with a low shot. Blues battled away following the early setback however and equalised 8 minutes from half-time when Jackman passed two defenders before shooting into the top corner.

This gave Blues confidence which they carried over into the second half, taking the lead in the 53rd minute when Andy Walker scored following a one-two with Andy Edmonds on the penalty spot. Just 4 minutes later Grazioli scored his second and in the end both teams had to settle for just the one point.
