The FA Cup third round qualifying has featured recently on this date, with a trip to Surrey in 2013 to play new opponents in Chipstead.
Blues may have been guilty of underestimating their opponents who took the lead on 17 minutes. A chipped free kick from Simon Cooper caught Stortford napping and Carlton Murray-Price hooked the ball past Joe Wright and into the bottom left corner.
It took Stortford a while to get back into the game as the first half wore on and they showed little threat until they were thrown a lifeline in the 38th minute. Miller was hacked down in the box and Kyle Vassell got another FA Cup goal when he hit the penalty right down the middle for the equaliser. 1-1 at halftime was satisfactory if a little underwhelming for Blues.
Warming up gradually Blues began to pose a threat in the second half and Chipstead keeper Anthony Hall had to make a double save in the 52nd minute. First he tipped Vassell’s curling shot on to the bar and then saved Miller’s follow up shot while Cliff Akurang was unable to reach the loose ball. A minute later and there was a repeat of the first Stortford goal as Miller was brought down in the box and Vassell scored with the penalty to give Blues the lead for the first time.
Before the hour was up it was 3-1 and Blues were cruising as Church found Miller in the box and the full back hit a low shot across Hall and into the bottom left corner. Vassell then completed his hat trick with a strike from the edge of the box.
On 69 minutes Akurang got on the scoresheet as he turned Kyle Asante’s mis-hit shot into the net. Akurang finished off the scoring with Blue’s sixth goal as he was put through by Nicky Symons to roll the ball under the keeper and finish off a much more comfortable win than had appeared likely earlier.
