Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on October 4th
In our last Isthmian League season we had a good win on this day against old rivals Billericay Town. Both teams had made a poor start to the season being placed 20th and 23rd respectively after 12 games. This made it an important game for Blues to win, you don’t get away from the bottom of the table if you can’t win home games against those below you and Martin Hayes acknowledged that it was a “6 pointer”. There was a Spurs-Arsenal flavour too with Billericay managed by ex-Spur Justin Edinburgh.
The first chance came early on as Bunn’s volley from a corner was saved at full stretch by Jerome John for Billericay. Stortford keeper Desborough was also in action saving from Ansell. Mid-way through the first half Stortford took the lead. Gareth Gwillim took a corner which was cleared straight back to him. At the second go he found Grant Cooper who headed the first goal. On the half hour mark the lead looked much more secure as Blues won a free kick 25 yards out. This was taken by Cooper who brilliantly bent the ball round the wall and into the far corner to make it 2-0. This was how the score remained at half-time.
Early in the second half there was a warning for Blues when Dormer hit a powerful header against the bar to remind us that Billericay had not given up yet. Blues returned the favour as some neat passing football ended in a shot by Southam that hit the Billericay bar. Blues controlled the game now but without being able to add to their lead. Late in the second half they thought they had made it 3-0 when Neill’s shot was deflected in but the “goal” was disallowed for a foul by Renner. Finally in the 89th minute the game was killed off when a great through ball from Langer found Southam who made no mistake to wrap up the points.
The only other game on this date in the last 10 years was in 2008 when we played Welling United in a Conference South game here. Both teams were around mid-table, us just below, Wings just above so you might expect a close game. That’s how it proved with Welling taking the points thanks to a freak goal in the 73rd minute when Andrew’s cross caught the wind and floated over Nicky Eyre and into the goal via the underside of the bar.
Finally today was also the date of the first ever game at Rhodes Avenue a 2-1 win over Ware in the East Herts League all of 92 years ago.
