Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on September 16th

Jason WilliamsIt had only taken eight games, but the visit of Kings Langley to the ProKit UK Stadium in 2017 saw Blues finally record their first victory in the Southern League as goals from Darren Foxley and Jason  Williams gave Kevin Watson’s side a 2-0 win.

Meanwhile, the FA Cup does throw up some unusual pairings sometimesand so it was that in 2000 we made a rare trip to Norfolk to play Diss Town in a game that had us set up for a giant killing.

In the first half Diss looked like the brighter side as they played some neat football and gave the Blues defence some scary moments. Coren Hardy was the main threat and he almost scored after 25 minutes when he spotted Craig Tucker off his line and hit a dipping shot from 35 yards out which Tucker scrambled back to tip over at full stretch.

The best chance for Blues in this period came on 9 minutes when Trevor Paul released Vinnie John, but the strikers shot was hit straight at Simon Bellamy in the Diss goal.

As the half progressed Blues gradually began to take control and almost took the lead on 37 minutes. Danny Foot sent over a great cross and Tony Comerford met it first time but somehow Bellamy managed to turn his shot around for a corner. Comerford took the corner, John flicked it on at the near post and Paul knocked the ball home to give Blues the vital first goal.

Two minutes before the interval the lead was doubled with a wonderful solo goal from John. He did well to keep the ball in play on the right touchline, beat the defender and took the ball into the penalty area before firing an unstoppable shot past Bellamy and into the far corner.

The second half was comfortable with Blues always looking in control although Andy Ingham did fire into the side netting on 50 minutes.

The third goal came on 82 minutes. Martin Sedgwick’s clearance was won by John who played the ball nicely into the path of Paul on his left and he drove past Bellamy from just inside the penalty area.

With a minute to go Paul completed his hattrick latching onto a great through ball from Ryan Gunn before firing past the helpless Diss keeper. Tim Langer completed the scoring in the final minute after the ball broke to him on the left and his shot was deflected past Bellamy.

A comfortable win then, although the score was somewhat flattering.
