Blast from the past

Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on September 22nd

There was FA Cup action on this date in 2012 as we travelled to play Enfield Town in an FA Cup second round qualifying match at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium.

Skipper Reece Prestedge had a free-kick held by Town keeper Noel Imber and Steve Cawley hit a rising shot wide of a post early on and it was a surprise when the Ryman Premier Leaguers took the lead in the 10th minute. Following a movement on the right a low cross squirmed its way into just inside the area from Adam Wallace. Former Blue Tyler Campbel reacted quickest and hitting the loose ball first time beat Jorg Stadelmann with a 16 yard shot high into the net that gave the keeper little chance.

The Blues’ composure didn’t seem affected and eight minutes later nearly equalised when Matt Johnson’s corner from the left was met by glancing header from Phil Anderson that was headed off the goal-line by Michael Bardle. However, the Blues were back on level terms in the 22nd minute. Ricky Sappleton nodded the ball down the left for Steve Cawley to chase and the midfielder’s low centre found Jesse Waller-Lassen who, although slightly off balance, placed his left footed shot inside the near post.

Stortford now imposed themselves on the match and when Reece Prestedge played a short pass up to Matt Johnson in the 28th minute Johnson’s shot from fully 30 yards was turned away for a corner by keeper Imber diving to his left. The visitors took the lead five minutes before the interval after a Lewwis Spence corner. Ricky Sappleton, towards the back post, rose to send an excellent header under the bar to register his first goal of the afternoon.

Three minutes later Sappleton, who gave the Enfield defence a torrid afternoon, laid the ball back for Matt Johnson to have a crack at goal and his strong drive was only a foot over the top.

Most of the early play on the restart was confined to the midfield and there were few incidents. However, on the hour, the Blues extended their lead with another goal following a corner. This time it was from a Matt Johnson flag kick on the left and when Sappleton again found space to head goalwards, Michael Bardle’s attempted headed clearance hit the underside of the bar and bounced downwards before Imber caught the rebound. Referee Ian Cooper immediately signalled a goal and there seemed to be few complaints from the Town players.

The hosts had quite a lot of the possession after Stortford’s third goal but it was the Blues who continued to look more menacing in attack. In the 65th minute Waller-Lassen had a chance to double his tally when he missed a Reece Prestedge cross from the left in space and not far from goal and then Sappleton shot over the bar after linking with Matt Johnson.

Jorg Stadelmann was forced to punch away a couple of Town crosses into the middle but the Austrian keeper was rarely troubled by a direct shot. The tie went a little flat for a short period until eight minutes from the end of normal time when Matt Johnson and Ricky Sappleton again

combined with this time the big striker driving the ball just wide of the target and a little later he was close with a header.

The fourth goal arrived in the 86th minute. Waller-Lassen and Sinclair-Furlonge set up Matt Johnson to fire a long ball up the right flank from deep inside the Stortford half for Sappleton to gain control and after performing a trademark turn of a defender he cut in for goal and hammered a low drive that although Imber got his body and hands to, could do nothing to stop the ball

deflecting off him to cross the goal-line at the far upright.

Stortford almost netted a fifth goal in the first minute of time added on when Sinclair-Furlonge headed narrowly wide at the back post following a Matt Johnson free-kick on the left.

There was a booking for each side late in the tie as Referee Ian Cooper showed yellow cards to Stortford substitute Bertie Brayley and Enfield’s Michael Ewang.
