Blast from the past
Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on September 10th
In 2011 we made the relatively short trip, by Conference North standards up the A1 to play Gainsborough Trinity at their proper old fashioned non-league ground The Northolme.
The first chance of the game fell to Ryan Kendall for Trinity as he ran 20 yards and forced Nicky Eyre to save at the expense of a corner. Shortly afterwards Gayle got behind the back four and could have put Blues in front but the final shot was too weak. There was a warning for Stortford as Kevin Sanwith hit the post from a free kick before Trinity took the lead. Michael Leary found Gavin Cowan in plenty of space and the home striker headed the first goal. Gayle then hit a post for Stortford but Blues were then under pressure as Eyre make a last ditch tackle to stop Kendall, the loose ball goiing to Ryan Williams who wasted it by shooting over the bar. Soon after Eyre cleared a ball straight to Williams who took a long range shot straight back from distance, forcing Eyre to save again.
Stortford heeded the warning and became more dominant at this stage but up to half time could only manage one clear chance through Bakare. Overall a 1-0 lead for the home team seemed a fair reflection of the play at the interval.
Blues had the first chance of the second half with only a last minute interception by Andrew Boyce denying Gayle. Blues were to regret the waste of a chance as Trinity scored a second in the 52nd minute. Ryan Kendall ran on to a throw, beat one defender and found Terence Stamp unmarked who made no mistake with his shot. Trinity were dominant at this stage with Kendall runniing past the defence only to shoot wide and on the hour mark Leary crossed to Stamp who headed straight at Eyre. This time the home side were to regret their profligacy as Cole found Bakare in the 66th minute and the Stortford striker halved the deficit.
Warlow then hit the woodwork for Gainsborough before the Lincolnshire side increased their lead in the 76th minute. Stamp found Williams who beat Eyre from 30 yards with a great shot. Stortford were not about to give up though as Paco Craig, on his debut found Bakare in a great position and the striker scored his and Blues second in the 80th minute to set up a great finale. Sadly Dean Rance was injured in the build up to the goal and with all subs used already Blues were down to 10 men for the last 10 minutes.
In injury time Gayle had two chances saved by Phil Barnes in the Gainsborough goal as the visitors searched for an equaliser. Unfortunately Stamp ended Blues hopes with almost the last kick as he scored with a volley from the edge of the penalty area to end an entertaining game.
