Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on September 8th
In the present century this has been a good date for Bishop’s Stortford FC. The last three games have seen two away wins with 9 goals scored. In 2009 we visited Hampton for a Conference South game and came away with a comfortable win. After losing 5-1 at home to Bath City the previous Saturday Mark Simpson made several changes to the side and was vindicated as Blues bounced back.
The home side made a good start with Wells, from a free kick and Charles from open play both shooting over the bar. Both sides had early penalty appeals turned down before Blues took the lead on the quarter hour from a counter attack. Nicholls and Bowditch played a good one two before a good cross found Sheringham at the far post to score. Only 10 minutes later Nicholls and Bowditch combined again to set up Sheringham for the second. It was comfortable from then till half time until Matt Jones was injured in a clash of heads and had to go off giving Ben Nunn his league debut. Hampton seized the chance to put some pressure on and Eyre had to make a great save to keep the lead intact at half time.
The second half saw Hampton make a sustained attempt to get back into the game and both Nunn and Cooper had to make goalmouth clearances from free kicks. Stortford weathered the storm though and a great move between Nunn and Harris almost set up Nicholls on the edge of the area. With only 15 minutes to go Sheringham got his hat trick. When Brayley crossed from the left the Stortford striker lobbed Lovett in the Hampton goal from the edge of the area. The game was over as a contest now and Champion had the ball in the net for a 4th time from a free kick only to see it disallowed for offside. In the 80th minute Hampton scrambled a consolation goal through Braithwaite with Eyre disputing whether the ball had crossed the line. The Stortford goalkeeper made a good save from a long range free kick to preserve the two goal lead and the visitors went home with the 3 points.
There was an even more emphatic win at Barking & East Ham United in 2001 as Blues started their promotion push from the Isthmian Division 1. There was another hat trick – this time from Vinnie John with 1 in the first half and 2 in the second which, along with a Phil Gridelet goal gave Stortford a 4-0 win.
Younger supporters may be puzzled by the 2-2 draw at Hayes in the GMAC Cup. Suffice it to say that this was a sponsored competition which didn’t last long after we won it in 1990 and on paper it looks like an entertaining game I’m not sure how seriously either side took the game.
