Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on September 5th
I usually try to concentrate on the positive in these articles but when you look back on matches played on this day there is no ignoring the events of 1998 when Blues suffered their record home defeat – not the record defeat in Bishop’s Stortford because it was played at Boreham Wood FC during the exile while Woodside Park was being built.
At the beginning of September BSFC had been homeless for eight months. Despite this they had made a reasonable start to the season, unbeaten, although also without a win – in 12th place in the league table with 4 draws from 4 games. Aldershot were in 5th place and one of the favourites for the title. This was always a tough game, just how tough would quickly became apparent.
For 12 minutes all went well, then Aldershot took the lead as Endersby was left unmarked in the box. Three minutes later Gavin King misjudged a bounce and Joe Nartey beat him to the ball and headed into an empty net. After this Blues got back into the game for a while. There was nearly an own goal from Dack and then Conroy, Greene and Forbes all had good chances for Stortford and at half-time it was still 0-2 with Blues very much in the game.
On 52 minutes however Nartey chipped King to make it 3-0. Four minutes later what was a steep hill to climb became a hopeless task as Nartey scored his hat trick to make it 4-0. Just after the hour Nartey was left in acres of space to score his 4th. In the 69th minute Gary Abbott chipped in from 20 yards and a minute later Nartey ran through the centre of the defence, brushed aside a challenge and got his 5th. The scoring was completed as Abbott headed home his second to make it 8-0.
Although Stortford were relegated that season they were in with a chance until late April of avoiding the drop and they didn’t suffer a succession of heavy defeats. What happened here was that a team with shaky confidence fell apart and everything fell right for Aldershot. The two teams met again in the FA Cup a month later and the result was much closer at 2-0 to the Shots.
A recent game on this date was against Somerset opponents as we lost heavily at home to Bath City. We were bracketed together in mid-table with very similar records so there was every reason to believe it would be a close game but that was not how it turned out.
Bath took the lead after only 8 minutes as Adam Connolly hit a close range shot which Ed Thompson could only push into the net via the bar. Midway through the half a mistake by Paul Goodacre allowed Sido Jombati to cross for Darren Edwards to score the second. After a miss Blues did get back into the game just before half time when Wright’s cross found Sheringham who scored in the bottom left corner.
Blues fans who thought this would be the start of a come back were to be disappointed. Edwards scored for Bath seven minutes into the second half o restore the two goal lead. Just after the hour Lewis Hogg scored from a free kick 20 yards out to make it 4-1 and Mohamed added the 5th 10 minutes from the end.
