Blast from the past

Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on August 7th

The most recent competitive game on this date was a Herts Charity Cup game away to Baldock Town in the pouring rain in 1999.

Blues controlled the opening stages of the game, creating a number of chances. A Martin Hayes cross from the left caused confusion in the home defence with shots from Mark Flatts and Danny Benstock which were blocked. Then Scott Witney tried his luck from near the half way line but Adam Wheeler was alert to it in the Baldock goal. After nine minutes Hurracia Willock and Hayes combined well, but Wheeler was again alert saving first from Willock and then recovering to turn Danny Benstock’s shot around for a corner.

Against the run of play Baldock took the lead on 13 minutes. A free kik on the right touch line was swung in by Steve Behan and met with a powerful drive by Richard Chattoe coming in at the far post. Baldock now began to take control of the game and doubled their lead on 26 minutes with a brilliant 25 yard strike by Steve Cook.

It went from bad to worse as the home side scored their third in the 36th minute. Another great cross from Steve Behan was met by a powerful header from Gary Walker at the far post. Tony Comerford then missed a chance to give Blues a lifeline before half time when he headed an Alan Harding corner over the bar.

The second half saw a better Blues performance but the damage had been done. Wheeler was soon in action again in the Baldock goal clawing away a Hayes header and thesaving well from Harding. On 53 minutes Mark Flatts set up Witney but the shot went over the bar.

Blues pulled a goal back on 76 minutes when Dak Lee handled in the box and Ibrahim Oladeji calmly scored from the penalty. Unfortunately the Blues defence then sabotaged their chances allowing Barry Dellar a free run at goal, rounding Jason White and scoring in an empty net. With two minutes left Stortford scored a consolation as Mark Flatts crossed from the left, Oladeji knocked the ball down and Danny Benstock drove home.
