Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on August 4th
2009 saw the first of two consecutive Herts Charity Cup first round ties against Broxbourne as we faced them at home in 2009 and then away in 2010.
With the following day’s friendly against West Ham and the imminent start of the Blues Square South season in mind, it was a virtual Blues reserve team who took the field at Woodside Park with only Tom Champion starting both games.
After a goalless draw, Stortford had led 3-2 on penalties after both side had taken three spot kicks, but Barbadian international keeper Obey Murefu saved attempts from Dave Chick and Ben Nunn, and Borough converted their final two penalties to win the tie.
A first half of little action saw Duane Jackman go closest with a well-struck shot, and Rory Hill also chipped over when he should have done better.
It took a defensive mistake for Stortford to make their over-all pressure tell when, in the 55th minute, Tony Burke knocked the ball across his own area and Ashley Taylor-Forbes nipped in to round the keeper and knock into an empty net.
Blues seemed to take their foot off the gas at that point, and Ben Stone did well to block Nicky Marsh’s volley before the Spartan South Midlands League side levelled in the 83rd minute.
Former Blues player Pani Paniayiotou was on hand to fire home from a corner as the Stortford defence looked in disarray.
Chick and Hill could have sealed the win in extra-time, while Watts had a header cleared off the line at the other end before Borough went on to win the spot kick lottery.
