Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on March 31st
Our most recent game on this date was a 5-0 defeat at Hyde who were on their way to the Conference North Championship – this was the second time we had played them in a week due to a postponement.
However the outstanding game on this date was a derby match against Harlow Town back in 2001. Blues were aiming for promotion from Isthmian Division 1 while Harlow were mid-table with only local pride to play for – however noone should under estimate the power of local pride.
Stortford got off to a great start in front of a crowd of 624 with a goal on 11 minutes. Good build up play involving Trevor Paul and Vinnie John set up Lee Endersby to drive in a fierce shot giving Harlow keeper James Hassell no chance.
Blues kept up the pressure and increased their lead from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute when John was felled in the box by David Gray. The referee was unforgiving and John despatched the penalty easily as Hassell was rooted to the spot. By the 25th minute it was 3-0. A cross from the right was headed home by John and Stortford were threatening to inflict an embarrassing scoreline on their neighbours. It was particularly pleasing for John who had been taunted by the visiting fans from the outset but to his credit he hurt them in the right way by scoring two goals.
Harlow reduced the deficit almost immediately when a Jon Hooker free kick was deflected off John Coley following confusion in the Stortford penalty area. Blues were then rocked by the departure of Lee Endersby with a groin strain and he was replaced by Tyrone Hercules on the right wing. It was ironic then that Blues most recent transfer target for the right wing berth, Marc Salmon should further reduce the deficit before half time. Salmon powerfully drove home following some poor defending at a corner making it 3-2 at half time.
The visitors introduced Andy Purcell after the interval replacing Nicholson in midfield. It was Purcell who scored the inevitable equaliser as Stortford had a slow start to the second half, smashing the ball home from 18 yards.
After the equaliser Stortford came back into the game again and two chances fell to John, the first being claimed by Hassell, the second when he miscued a shot when it seemed easier to score. But it would be John that was involved in the winning goal as he was again felled by Gray in the penalty box in the 77th minute.
This time the penalty responsibility was with Garry Kimble and the Stortford veteran duly sent Hassell the wrong way to spark celebrations from the Blues fans. Stortford held out for the win without being duly stretched and Harlow’s misery was further compounded by the dismissal of John Coley at the death. A cracking atmosphere and a super day for the fans. Unfortunately Blues had to wait another year for promotion as they missed out in 2001.
