Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on March 24th

By a strange quirk of fate we played on this date on three consecutive years with Conference South fixtures in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

In 2007 Bognor Regis Town and the officials were delayed by traffic on the M25 so that the match kicked off over half an hour late. The delay seemed to affect the home side more than the visitors though. Stortford were in fourth place at the start of the game, hoping to improve their play off hopes against a Bognor team who were not far off the relegation places. The Sussex side had the first chance when Rowland deflected a cross just over the bar. Stortford took control after that but there was a worrying lack of urgency and penetration. Matt Jones had a long range shot over the bar while Greg Pearson (pictured) put a header onto the roof of the net but the visitor’s keeper was not tested in any meaningful way. Out of the blue Bognor took the lead when Chamberlain was given too much time on the ball and fired a shot from 20 yards which went over Young and into the goal via the underside of the cross bar. The second half saw more of the same with Blues having plenty of possession but hardly threatening while Bognor could have increased their lead with a rare breakaway, but nevertheless the game finished 1-0 to the visitors.

In 2008 on an early Easter Monday we entertained old friends in Sutton United. We were again chasing a play off place in fifth while Sutton were having a wretched season and were bottom of the table. This time the game went more according to the script, thanks mainly to Sam Higgins who was at the centre of most of the action. He created the first two chances, the first a shot that Davies saved in the Sutton goal after five minutes. Immediately after Higgins had another shot which Davies couldn’t hold but Pearson mishit the rebound. In the 15th minute Higgins did score with a header from a Jason Mason corner. Sutton tried to get back into the game but soon after Edwards increased the lead after an unselfish pass from Pearson who could have shot himself. Early in the second half Edwards scored the third following a throw in and Blues then seemed to relax with the match won. Sutton came back into the game but could only get the one consolation goal near the end through Goodchild.

In 2009 we visited Bromley for a league game which saw both sides in mid-table. Stortford had several players out due to injury but managed to force the first chance when Danny Harris forced a save out of Williams. Five minutes later McBean made some space with his pace but Nicky Eyre made a good save. Goodacre hit a post with the keeper beaten but Bromley had most of the chances in the first half which however ended goalless. McBean hit the post for Bromley in the 55th minute but the respite was short lived as on the hour the same player scored the only goal of the game. Protests regarding a push on the keeper were brushed aside. Blues fought back strongly and made chances but had to settle for second best on this occasion.
