Blast from the past

Andrew Cornell looks back at Blues’ games on February 24th

In 2009 we made the short trip to Hampton for a league game. Hampton were second in the table while we were just below half way and the home side was on an unbeaten run of 14 games, the last seven of which had been victories, and looking a very tough proposition.
The home side attacked from the off and started to create plenty of chances. Ian Hodges fired over in the first minute, minutes later Lawrence Yaku`s shot was deflected for a corner, Yaku then headed wide from a Shaun McAuley cross. In the 15th minute Hodges received the ball from a Yaku knock down, but his effort went for a corner. After all this Hampton pressure it was a major surprise when Stortford sored out of the blue in the 20th minute when Marcello Fernandes was adjudged to have fouled in the area. Matt Lovett blocked the initial penalty but was unable to stop Danny Harris scoring from the rebound. McAuley was a constant wide threat, Stuart Lake fired just wide from 25 yards, Hodges sent Yaku away but Stortford keeper Ed Thompson got the slightest of touches to concede a corner, despite constant pressure from Hampton Blues still led 1-0 at half time.

The second half saw more of the same, Hodges headed over, Francis Quarm shot into the side netting. In the 64th minute Hampton brought on Ryan Lake for Fernandes and Kieran Knight for Yaku. Minutes later McAuley was denied by Thompson but then in the 68th minute Ryan Lake fed Knight who made a run into the penalty area and was tripped as he shot. Referee Carl Berry (who had a good game) awarded a penalty. Quarm hit the spot kick to Thompson`s left and although the keeper went the right way, he couldn`t get to it, 1-1. In the 75th minute Knight held up the ball in midfield and released Hodges who battled his way into the penalty area before he, too, was taken down from behind for a second penalty, the third of the game. Up stepped Quarm again, this time striking the penalty to Thompson`s right, again the keeper guessed the right way, but still couldn`t get there, 2-1 to Hampton. Overall, despite the result a good battling performance from Blues.

Further back in time, in 1973 we made our first Semi-Final in a National FA Competition when we beat old rivals Dagenham in an FA Amateur Cup 4th Round Replay. Sadly, another old rival, Slough Town made us wait another year for our first Wembley Final.
