Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on February 6th

A 2-1 home defeat against Ebbsfleet United in 2016 (Morgan Ferrier getting the goal) broke a run three consecutive games on this date which finished 4-0, unfortunately only one was a win.

In 2010 we travelled to Maidenhead for what appeared to be an evenly matched league game. We were 13th in the Conference South table while the Magpies were in 17th place but with 3 games in hand.

Despite being closely matched in the league table a catalogue of defensive errors sent Bishop’s Stortford to another rout at the hands of Maidenhead United on a boggy playing surface at York Road. Mark Simpson was still without regular keeper Nicky Eyre, Stevland Angus, Mitch Hahn and Louie Riddle through injury and with Damon Lathrope returning to Norwich City had limited options with his starting line -up. Academy player Nick Azzopardi started the match on right wing, with Alex Bentley returning in defence in place of Victor Boyle-Renner.

Maidenhead had a great opportunity in the first two minutes when Daniel Brown played the ball behind Ritchie Jones, but Alex Wall scuffed the ball with only Mehmet to beat. Minutes later, Bertie Brayley sent a freekick well wide from a good position just outside the penalty area.
Maidenhead were dealt a blow when striker Kieron St Aimie went off after just five minutes , but his replacement, Kieran Knight, set up an opportunity for Alex Wall with his first touch. Mehmet then had to scramble a goalbound cross away from Bobby Behzadi with the help of Matt Jones to keep Stortford in the game.

Stortford’s first attempt on target in the opening period came when Roy Essandoh headed straight at Chris Tardif from Azzopardi’s cross. However, Blues looked dangerous from set pieces, with Max Lettejallow trying an audacious scissor kick from Scott Shulton’s free kick on the right hand side. Bertie Brayley’s low shot from a Ben Nunn pass was the best attempt on goal, but his attempt went just wide of the post. Maidenhead took the lead on 34 minutes when Kieran Knight played in an unmarked Sam Collins, who gave the keeper no chance with a powerful shot across the goal. Alex Bentley’s last ditch clearance stopped Alex Wall from beating the offside trap soon after, but on the stroke of half-time Jamal Fyfield broke free on the left and crossed for Wall to poke home in a goalmouth scramble and send Blues in two goals down.

Blues started the second half more positively, with a Bertie Brayley freekick being easily saved by Tardif, and ten minutes later, Roy Essandoh headed Brayley’s freekick just wide. However, the game was soon over when Alex Wall set Bradley Quamina clear in acres of space and he was able to easily beat Mehmet to put the match beyond Stortford’s reach. Max Lettejallow managed a long range effort before Wall capitalized on a defensive error by substitute Chris Sargent and
unleashed a powerful effort to put Maidenhead four goals up. Sam Cooper hit a post in the last ten minutes, with Scott Shulton’s late effort being Stortford’s only real shot on target in the second half, which Chris Tardif was equal to.
