Andrew Cornell looks back on Blues’ games on January 27th
We only have to look back a decade for the outstanding game on this date. Blues have a good record at Westleigh Park, win or lose, and while we lost two years ago the entertainment value was undisputable. At the time of the game we were second in the table with Havant & Waterlooville in fourth place with two games in hand so the importance of the game was clear.
Stortford started without Gwillim, Martin or Howell, but Matt Jones made a great replacement at full back and Roy Essandoh (pictured) was in despite being doubtful 24 hours earlier. Essandoh started well, heading a free kick from Collis straight at the keeper on 3 minutes but then giving Blues the lead as the same combination worked on 11 minutes. He then had to go off, replaced by Ashley Fuller who took up a wide position with Jack Midson pushed forward. It took half an hour before Havant had their first serious effort on goal from which they scored through Wilkerson! In the very next minute Rocky Baptiste forced a good low save out of Chris Wright as the Hawks began to show their fans what they could do. Blues were under pressure now but a great counter attack saw Fuller deliver a great cross to Lockett who scored to give Stortford the half time lead.
Havant revealed their intentions by replacing a defender with midfielder Brett Poate at half time but it was Stortford who attacked first. Danny Morgan shot just wide but within a minute Midson had made space for himself and scored to give us a 3-1 lead. For some time Blues soaked up the pressure and looked more likely to score again on the counter attack but when the dam burst we were flooded by Havant goals as all the home team’s confidence came back. First Baptiste halved the deficit, heading in from close range and on 70 minutes Poate equalised. It was end to end stuff now as Lockett had a shot cleared off the Havant line before Stanbrook cleared a shot off the Stortford line from Baptiste. With 3 minutes left it looked like Blues might get a creditable draw at 3-3 when Jordan headed the Hawks into the lead for the first time. Shortly after Baptiste scored his second and Havant’s fifth to apparently wrap it up for the home side. However in the first minute of time added on Goodacre headed in from Midson’s cross and there was still time for Innocent to just fail to get on the end of a header from Stanbrook for what would have been an equaliser. A disappointing result for Blues but a great game for the neutral.
