Wingate & Finchley 0-2 Bishop’s Stortford Match Report

Wingate & Finchley 0-2 Bishop’s Stortford Match Report 26/3/22

Two goals in as many second half minutes were enough for Bishop’s Stortford to secure a fourth consecutive win away to Wingate & Finchley on Saturday. The Blues are on a run of 14 games unbeaten, and have kept nine clean sheets on the bounce. Chris Harris and Frankie Merrifield struck the double blow at the Maurice Rebak Stadium, with the visitors able to maintain a grasp on second place in the Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division.

Johnville Renee’s diagonal pass was headed down by Darren Foxley into Harris path, but his half-volley went wide. Tyrique Clarke made a powerful run through the midfield and into the box, but Billy Cracknell blocked his shot, and Anthony Church could only side-foot Jonny Giles’ low free kick over the crossbar at the near post. Dylan Kearney was fouled on the edge of the box, but Clarke’s free kick curled wide of the target. Church’s through ball to Harris was well controlled, but the shot was deflected and Ben Goode made the save. Harris tested Goode again with a smart turn and low shot towards the bottom right, but a full length dive by the goalkeeper kept him at bay. Antonis Vasiliou latched onto a ball over the top of the Blues’ defence but fired wide from a tight angle and hit the side-netting. A low cross off the right by Vasiliou was cleared in front of goal for a corner by Ryan Henshaw, before the Blues skipper deflected a shot by Vasiliou into Jack Giddens’ gloves. A low shot by Foxley as he ghosted into the box at the back post unmarked was blocked by Ifil, before a longer range effort by the winger whistled just wide of the right post. Kearney’s free header was mistimed and off target from Vasiliou’s cross. Foxley went down under challenge in the box, but referee George Warren gave a free kick the other way for simulation, before Goode rushed out of his goal to protest at Foxley for a dive, with the goalkeeper seemingly punching Foxley in the face. Both players were booked for the altercation on the stroke of half-time.

HT 0-0

A left wing corner by Giles was headed wide by Cracknell, before Harris made the breakthrough on the hour mark, he received the ball from a through ball and brushed off two defenders before chipping Goode and he rushed out to claim the bouncing ball. Less than a minute later, substitute Merrifield slammed home the second after another substitute in Jason Banton’s cross/shot was parried out to the Blues’ top scorer on six yards after a block by Jake Eales. Ollie Peters then won the ball back on the right wing and squared to Harris, but a bobble before it reached him meant he fired off target. Archie Edwards’ long range strike went high of the goal, before Banton fired wide from Harris’ knock down from a Peters cross from the right.
