Kingstonian 0-2 Bishop’s Stortford Match Report 9/4/22

Bishop’s Stortford secured a place in the play-offs of the Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division with a 0-2 win at Kingstonian on Saturday. Darren Foxley scored both as the Blues won for the sixth match in a row, kept an 11th consecutive clean sheet and extended the unbeaten run to 16 matches against the only visiting side to have won at the R & D Advisors UK Stadium in the league this season. A win for Worthing meant they were confirmed as champions, but Stortford are still in the driving seat to finish second, with a defeat for Enfield Town and draws for Lewes, Folkestone Invicta and Cheshunt on Saturday.

Foxley pounced on a defensive error to open the scoring in the third minute, Ryan Charles floated a cross in from the left, a poor defensive header landed kindly to the winger unmarked on the six-yard line and he calmly slotted home. Johnville Renee’s cross from the right was into a good area for Charles, but Julian Schwarzer gathered the loose ball after a mis-control. Schwarzer saved to deny Chris Harris a goalbound header from Jonny Giles’ left wing free kick, before a brilliant reaction save to deny Foxley a first half brace, firstly moving to his left, he got down low to his right to keep out a ferocious volley from Charles’ cross off the left. Kenny Beaney’s free kick on the left wing was headed away by Ryan Henshaw, before Jack Giddens recovered to save after a swift counter-attack by the hosts saw them with a three-on-one, he perfectly timed his dive to grasp the ball from the striker’s feet after a poorly timed pass from the right. Schwarzer came off his goal-line to punch a cross but only as far as Foxley on the edge of the box who attempted a chip into the open goal, only for Simon Cooper to head off the line before Eze Ebuzoeme cleared.

HT 0-1

Substitute Anthony Church fizzed a pass into Harris’ feet with his back to goal he laid it off to Charles advancing up the left wing but he dragged his low shot wide. A poor defensive header from a Charles left wing cross fell invitingly for Harris to volley, but his effort went high of the target. Charles brought down the ball brilliantly on the left side of the box, beat his man but couldn’t find a way through at the near post as Schwarzer saved with his legs. The Ks should have equalised when Cooper’s cross from the right landed to Ajakaiye in the middle, but he scuffed his shot when it looked easier to score and Henshaw cleared the danger. Beaney saw his free kick go over the crossbar, and Church’s volley from 10 yards was blocked following a fizzed cross from Foxley on the left. Foxley’s 18 yard header nearly found the top corner but went narrowly wide, before a powerful strike from the edge of the box by Frankie Merrifield forced a full length dive from Schwarzer to tip it past the post. The Blues eventually doubled their lead, when Foxley brough the ball down from a deep cross, he went past his defender and slid home the second into the bottom corner to secure the three points.
