Horsham 1-1 Bishop’s Stortford Match Report 23/10/21

Bishop’s Stortford were held to a 1-1 draw at 10-man Horsham on Saturday, with the Hornets’ equaliser coming in the fifth minute of second half injury time. Ryan Charles had netted for the Blues soon after the break, before substitute Shamir Fenelon’s late effort saw the hosts – who travel to Carlisle United in the FA Cup First Round – snatch a point.

After an early shot by Eddie Dsane from the the edge of the box from a cleared free kick, which was brilliantly saved by Jack Giddens, it was Blues dominance throughout the first half. Johnville Renee saw his free kick go over the bar after a foul on Ryan Charles, Ben Marlow brought the ball down and volleyed just wide of the goal and Anthony Church fired wide at the back post from a Jonny Giles free kick. Giles saw a shot saved by Sam Howes after a one-two with Frankie Merrifield, and Church saw a long range shot deflected behind for a corner. Jimmy Wallace nearly nodded home from the corner for what would have been a first Blues goal, but Howes made the save, and the high press from the Blues forced a mistake from Howes who passed straight to Giles, but he could only shoot wide. A smart run by Lee Harding saw him beat the offside trap, but from a tight angle he couldn’t hit the target. Merrifield ran through on goal but was denied by a brilliant last ditch tackle to deflect his shot into Howes’ grateful arms. After a run down the right wing, Giles cut in and shot but just wide of the post, before Danny Dudley saw red for fouling Merrifield on the edge of the box. Howes saved the resulting free kick from Giles, as the referee blew for half time with the Blues unable to make what would have been a deserved breakthrough.

HT 0-0

Continuing the pressure from the first half, the Blues started the second period well, with Merrifield making a smart run to beat the offside trap, but his shot from a tight angle was saved by Howes. Giles could only fire over the bar with an off-balance shot in the turn, before Charles nodded into the bottom left corner from Giles corner on the right side, to take a hard earned lead. ‘Spider’ nearly had his second headed goal just minutes later, but could only glance it wide from Ben Marlow’s cross. With Wallace receiving a yellow card, he was hesitant to tackle Dsane in the left channel, and the forward beat his man and fired in a low cross, only for Archie Edwards to stab it clear. Substitute Jake Cass latched on to Wallace’s long pass down the left wing, cut in and hit the post from the edge of the box. Giddens made a great save to deny Harding from the edge of the box, and from the resulting corner, Merrifield only headed the ball up in the air and Will Miles’ attempted overhead kick went off target. A brilliant switch by Cass from left to right found Merrifield, who stung the palms of Howes, as the Blues looked to kill the game late on, but the hosts were able to keep the deficit at just one. Howes denied Merrifield again, and Renee made a brilliant last ditch tackle to prevent a certain goal from Fenelon, as he was about to shoot. Renee was unable to prevent his second effort though, as the substitute ran on to a through ball from midfield and slotted home into the bottom right corner, prompting ecstatic celebrations from the home fans, before the referee called time just after the restart.
