Enfield Town 0-1 Bishop’s Stortford Match Report

Enfield Town 0-1 Bishop’s Stortford Match Report 3/12/22

Bishop’s Stortford climbed two places to third in the Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division with a 0-1 win at Enfield Town on Saturday. In the meeting between the two losing Play-Off Semi-Finalists from last season, the red card was shown five times during and after the match. The only goal came from Donell Thomas – his second in as many games – in the first half.

The Blues started on the front foot, with Thomas heading on target from a miscued clearance after Tosin Olufemi’s cross, but Nathan MCdonald made the save. Ryan Charles beat the full back on the left wing with a burst of pace, his inviting cross was held by McDonald with Darren Foxley waiting to head home at the back post. Foxley played a through ball to Charles who crossed low to Thomas with his back to goal, he laid it off to Frankie Merrifield, but his left-footed shot was high and wide of the goal. A superbly timed slide tackle from Ryan Henshaw denied Adam Cunnington as he raced through on goal, and Foxley dug out a shot after cutting in off the left wing with a small backlift, but the strike was straight at McDonald. The keeper then parried Thomas’ low strike from the right side of the box, and Merrifield nearly pounced for a tap in, but it was gathered at the second attempt. Jake Cass picked the ball up on the left wing and drove into the box, but couldn’t pick out a teammate with the cut back, and Henshaw’s diving header excellently cleared a whipped free kick by Lyle Della-Verde. The breakthrough came when Merrifield passed to Thomas on his left, he shifted the ball onto his right foot and struck low and powerfully into the bottom left corner from 25 yards.

HT 0-1

Anthony Wordsworth volleyed on target from 18 yards but a diving Jack Giddens made the save to his left. Cass lifted the ball over Giddens as he rushed out of goal, but Harry Beadle recovered to clear off the line. A melee in the centre-circle involving all 22 players then ensued, when an Enfield Town player refused to give up the ball for a Blues free kick. As a result, Beadle, Lewis Knight and James Richmond saw red. The home captain Scott Thomas was booked, and manager Andy Leese was sent to the stands. Foxley had half-volleyed into the net but the goal was disallowed for a handball in the build-up. And a dipping free kick from Foxley was saved by McDonald, before Cass broke through down the left wing and forced Giddens into a near post save with a powerful strike. From the resulting corner, substitute Dequane Wilson-Brathwaite won the header but Giddens tipped it over the bar. Pushing for an equaliser, Town packed the box for set pieces, and even had the ball in the net when a deep free kick was bundled home, but Giddens had been fouled as he came to catch the ball.
