Cray Wanderers 0-1 BSFC Match Report

Cray Wanderers 0-1 Bishop’s Stortford Match Report 11/12/21

Bishop’s Stortford got back to winning ways with a 0-1 victory at Cray Wanderers. After three draws, the Blues picked up three points on the road with a second successive clean sheet, extending the unbeaten run to 15 matches, with Anthony Church netting the only goal.

There was no magic for the Wands early on, as Stortford started on the front foot. Jonny Giles headed over the bar from Darren Foxley’s right wing cross, Jake Cass tried another cross from the right but Freddie Barton headed it away before Giles could volley home and Foxley rattled the post from a tight angle on the right side of the box. Cass headed goalwards from Giles’ free kick on the right side, but Cray managed to clear and Bailey Vose saved Ben Marlow’s shot from the edge of the box. Johnville Renee laid the ball off to Chris Harris who floated the cross towards Church in the box, but he headed wide, before Cass fired over from long range. Giles too could only head wide from a Renee cross, before Giles’ delivery from the left went straight into Vose’s gloves. Harris and Cass combined on the right wing, with the latter crossing to Giles in the middle but it was too heavy for him to meet. Kyel Reid’s corner from the right side was hooked away by Marlow on the six yard line, and after a poorly cleared Giles cross at the other end, Marlow shot wide from the edge of the box. Anthony Cook looked like he was through on goal thanks to a through ball from a team-mate, but Jack Giddens was out quickly to dive on the ball after a heavy touch, and Cameron Brodie fired wide with a low effort from 25 yards. Jamie Yila’s shot from range was straight at Giddens, and Barton’s cross towards Chris Dickson was overhit. Jai Reason tested Giddens with a low strike towards the bottom corner, but the keeper was equal to it, with Vose equal to Chris Harris’ goalbound header from Giles corner at the other end. Church bagged his goal from a Giles free kick from deep on the left hand side, Cass nodded it back across goal for Church to convert from close range with a diving header. On the stroke of half time, Cray Wanderers captain Dean Beckwith’s header from a free kick was saved by Giddens.

HT 0-1

With the hosts chasing the game in the second half, they piled on the pressure and tested the Blues defence. Brodie fired wide with a low strike and Robbins was required to clear Cook’s free kick as the Wands started the second half better. But Cass had a chance to increase the lead, his shot was deflected into Vose’s arms. Giddens plucked the ball out of the air with ease following a goalmouth scramble from a corner, and Church headed wide from a Giles corner. As the game approached its climax, an equaliser seemed the most likely outcome, especially when Giddens slipped over on the edge of his area as he rushed out to clear the ball, but Sam Robbins was on hand to spare his blushes with a clearance. Substitute Andy Drury could only head onto the roof on the net from a corner, and Barton saw his shot from the right side of the box saved by Giddens, as the Blues clung on for three points.
