Corinthian Casuals 0-1 Bishop’s Stortford Match Report 6/12/22

Bishop’s Stortford were made to work hard for a 0-1 win at relegation threatened Corinthian Casuals on Tuesday night. Blues skipper Ryan Henshaw got the decisive goal in the second half to climb back to second place in the Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division, on a night where table-toppers Hornchurch also won.

Casuals sat in in the first half and didn’t create much going forward, while also stifling the Blues attacking intent. The best chance before the break fell to Donell Thomas, whose header cannoned off the crossbar from Ryan Charles’ right wing cross, and he was denied his third goal in as many games. Nathaniel Pinney set up Zac Chislett for a strike from range, but his off-target shot was as close as the hosts came to scoring in the first period. Frankie Merrifield shifted the ball to his right for a shot but fired over the goal while off balance and falling on the stroke of half time.

HT 0-0

A rousing half-time team talk was evident at the start of the second half, as the Blues increased the intensity almost immediately, from a deep free kick, Henshaw was certain his looping header from 10 yards crossed the line, but Benas Libikas managed to dive on the ball and the goal was not given. Tosin Olufemi’s low cross was fizzed in towards Donell Thomas in the middle, but the defender got in front of the striker and cleared. Jay Porter’s deep cross from the left was flicked on by Henshaw at the near post, possibly looking for Merrifield in front of goal but the defender’s header looped over the goalkeeper and into the net. Merrifield laid the ball off to substitute Brandon Adams, but he couldn’t find the target, and Giles missed the top left corner with a powerful strike from the right side of the box. Just a minute later and Libikas was let off again, as Giles pulled his shot wide of the bottom right corner. Adams held the ball up on the edge of the box, waited for Merrifield to join him, who struck first time from the pass and it went over the bar, when taking a touch and placing it may have been the better option. A late flurry of pressure looked likely to force an equaliser for Casuals, but Porter blocked a shot from Luke Stokoe, and the follow-up was saved low by Giddens diving to his right.
