Cheshunt 0-0 (4-3 p) Bishop’s Stortford Match Report 18/12/21

Bishop’s Stortford’s Buildbase FA Trophy run ended with a penalty shootout defeat at Cheshunt on Saturday. The Third Round tie was goalless after 90 minutes, but the Ambers were clinical from the spot, scoring all four of their penalty kicks, while the Blues failed to convert two of the five.

Taylor Miles swung an early free kick into the box from the left wing, and the attempted toe-poke finish was saved by Jack Giddens. Jonny Giles’ free kick at the other end won a corner, but Jake Cass couldn’t get his head on it at the back post. Rowan Liburd – who scored a hat-trick last weekend against Corinthian Casuals – brought the ball down on his chest from Miles’ long pass, but could only shoot wide from a tight angle. George Marsh caught a whipped cross from Giles which looked to be creeping into the top corner, and Jake Cass could only shoot wide on the half-volley with Marsh rooted to the spot. Giddens saved a Liburd header from the edge of the box, and Zack Newton looked destined to score after a mazy run into the box, but he was tackled and the ball fell to Liburd, who curled wide with a first time shot. Mark Haines cleared a low cross from Liburd up into the air, and Newton fired wide on the rebound, before the referee blew for half time.

HT 0-0

Marsh saved a curling free kick by Giles from the edge of the D, before Ben Marlow had a great chance to open the scoring when he volleyed wide of an open goal, as Marsh had come to punch Haines’ clearance, only for Adam Crowther to attempt to head away. The ball fell kindly to Marlow but he fired wide from 18 yards. Frankie Merrifield and Ryan Henshaw both jumped but couldn’t meet a Giles free kick from the left wing, and Jamie Reynolds fired wide from 25 yards after crowd encouragement to shoot. Haines tried to get on the end of Giles bouncing free kick at the back post from the right hand side, but he couldn’t stretch enough to make contact, and Liburd thought he had hit the back of the net with a low side-footed effort towards the bottom left corner from a right wing cross, but Giddens got across his goal well to save. Cass shot wide on the rebound following a Giles free kick, and Anthony Church thought his shot from the edge of the box had been blocked by an arm in the box, but referee Oliver Mackey disagreed, and Henshaw too pleaded from a spot kick when he was tackled following a corner, receiving a booking for his protests. Mo Camara saw his shot deflected into Giddens’ arms and Cass volleyed high of the goal, but after 90 minutes of open play, neither side could get ahead, so a penalty shootout followed.

FT 0-0

The shootout took place at the end where the Blues were attacking in the second half, where a large number of Blues fans were gathered. Cass struck first for the Blues, firing straight down the middle, and Liburd soon levelled things up with a strike into the bottom left corner. Merrifield stroked the ball calmly into the bottom right corner before Reece Beckles-Richards slammed into the top left corner. Giles struck the crossbar and the Ambers went ahead as Miles scored into the bottom left corner. Ben Marlow converted into the bottom right corner, and Reynolds curled the ball into the left side netting. Faced with a ‘must score to stay in the game’ penalty, Johnville Renee’s spot kick was brilliantly palmed away by a diving Marsh, with the Cheshunt outfield players running from the halfway line to celebrate with their goalkeeper.

The Blues return to Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division action on Monday 27 December away to Bowers & Pitsea, before a rematch at home against Cheshunt on New Year’s Day.
