Canvey Island 2-0 Bishop’s Stortford Match Report 5/11/22

Bishop’s Stortford fell to a first defeat in 12 games away to an inspired Canvey Island on Saturday. A win could have taken the Blues back to the top of the Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division, but finish the day in third, with Hornchurch’s win seeing them climb to first, while there were defeats for Potters Bar Town and Aveley. Bradley Sach and Evans Kouassi scored for the Isthmian League North Division Play-Off winners, to which the visitors had no answer.

Odei Martin-Sorondo’s early cross to Sach looked dangerous, but in the early stages of the match, the striker took a heavy touch, with the ball going behind for a goal kick. Harry Beadle could only flick a header wide from Jonny Giles’ deep cross, before the No. 7 – returning to the starting XI – hit a powerful strike which looked destined for the top corner, but Bobby Mason tipped it over the crossbar at full stretch. Matt Johnson dropped his shoulder after feinting to shoot to go past the midfielder, but the genuine shot from 25 yards went high of the goal. Ollie Peters laid the ball off to Giles making a run inside him on the right wing, but the curling effort went wide, Johnson’s attempted header from Ryan Charles’ left wing cross went upwards instead of towards goal and Mason made the save. Connor Hubble’s free kick from near the corner of the box looked to be going straight into the goal, but Rob Girdlestone deflected it onto the crossbar, the ball bounced down onto the goal line and the Blues cleared the danger. Anthony Church was dispossessed in midfield by Martin-Sorondo who slid the ball into Sach, but his shot also hit the frame of the goal, before going behind for a goal kick. Ryan Henshaw’ last ditch slide blocked a low shot by Joe Paxman from Kouassi’s through ball to the right side of the box, as the Blues were perhaps fortunate to go in with the match goalless at the break.

HT 0-0

Frankie Merrifield received the ball from Charles’ through ball on the left side of the box, but the defender put in a well timed tackle before he could shoot. Charles then beat the offside trap with an arcing run, but Mason made a great save with his feet to deny him when he was one on one. Beadle slipped on the edge of the box, allowing space for Sach to run into and score from 18 yards with a low finish. Merrifield’s diving header from a left wing cross by Charles went straight to Mason, before Kouassi doubled the lead. After winning the ball in midfield, Kouassi best the offside trap to run on to a flicked header from a teammate, he then controlled the ball with his chest and volleyed into the top right corner. Kouassi almost netted a second, loitering on the edge of the box from a free kick, the ball was laid off to him and his powerful strike through a crowd was narrowly wide. Brandon Adams came off the bench to make his debut for Stortford, and he headed Darren Foxley’s left wing cross over the crossbar. Johnson’s half-volley was off target, and Mason saved on the line a downward header from a Blues corner by Foxley. Peters’ left wing cross was met by Beadle with a trademark leap, but he headed wide. Substitute Callum Sturgess saw his free kick shake the woodwork, the third time in the match for the Essex side. Foxley’s curling effort from range looked to be goalbound as it dipped, but Mason’s fingertip preserved his clean sheet.
