BSFC 3-1 Bognor Regis Town Match Report

Bishop’s Stortford 3-1 Bognor Regis Town Match Report 25/1/22

Bishop’s Stortford’s winning run continued at home to Bognor Regis Town, with a 3-1 success to make it a third consecutive victory, scoring 12 goals in the process. The Blues have maximum points from four home games in 2022, with the most recent three of these coming after the unbeaten run was ended at Hornchurch. Chris Harris, Frankie Merrifield and Darren Foxley got the goals while Jordy Mongoy netted a consolation for Bognor.

Foxley’s speculative effort was the first chance of the match, a long range effort which goalkeeper Amadou Tangara got down well to save, before he was in action again to catch a high cross from Jack Thomas off the left wing. Ex-Blue Mongoy was a bright spark for the visitors, having the first shot for the Rocks, with a low effort on the turn following a long throw-in but his effort went wide. Foxley fired in a low cross after running onto Harris’ flick on, but the Bognor defence were able to clear. Mongoy should have at least hit the target when a long throw off the right fell kindly to him at the near post, he controlled it well but blazed his shot over the bar from inside the six yard box. Tangara was on hand again to make a diving catch of Johnville Renee’s whipped cross from the right wing after a one-two with Foxley, before Harris made the crucial breakthrough on the stroke of half time with a deft, side-footed finish from Renee’s goal line cut back. His fifth goal in his last six games, Harris opened his body up and put it in the bottom left corner despite a last ditch slide from the defender to keep the ball out.

HT 1-0

After having little to do in the first half, Jack Giddens was in the action soon after the break, palming away a low shot from Kayne Diedrick-Roberts following a swift counter attack. But the Blues were able to build pressure with a brace of opportunities from cut backs, but neither Foxley nor Frankie Merrifield could get a shot away. Merrifield soon doubled the lead though, as Harris latched on to a clever reverse pass from Jonny Giles, he squared to Merrifield who slammed home from the six yard line after a failed clearance from a Bognor defender. Blues skipper Ryan Henshaw – making his 100th appearance for the club in this match – nearly marked the occasion with a goal as he headed against the post from a Giles free kick, and Mark Haines and Ben Marlow both saw follow-up shots blocked before the Rocks scrambled clear. Joe Cook saw his header from a free kick saved by Giddens, before Mongoy lashed home from a tight angle into the roof of the net, following a perfectly weighted through ball from Dan Gifford on the right wing. Substitute Anthony Church saw his left footed effort skew wide from Giles’ lay-off, before another Henshaw header cannoned the woodwork, and Bognor captain Craig Robson cleared the danger. With the visitors pushing for an equaliser, the last thing they needed was an unforced error, but pressure from Giles on Calvin Davies forced a mistake, and his clearance went only as far as Foxley, who squeezed a low shot inside the left post, via a deflection which took it away from the despairing Tangara.
