BSFC 3-0 Royston Town: MATCH REPORT

Bishop’s Stortford 3-0 Royston Town Match Report 14/10/20

Bishop’s Stortford are just 90 minutes of football away from the First Round Proper of the FA Cup after a 3-0 home win against Royston Town in the Third Qualifying Round. The Blues’ unbeaten run at the start of the season is now at eight games, with two goals from Frankie Merrifield and one from Correy Davidson. The draw for the Fourth Qualifying Round will be made on Thursday 15 October at 1PM.

After a frenetic start to the game with neither side able to keep possession, the first real chance came after a quarter of an hour, after Mark Haines’ quick-thinking from a free kick got Aaron Greene in behind the defence, but Archie Jones’s shot was palmed away by Joe Welch. A half chance fell for James Brighton on the edge of the box after a clearance, but he shot wide. Merrifield tried to reach Ben Marlow’s right wing cross bet it was behind him, before Darren Foxley won a corner after his follow-up shot was saved. Foxley took the corner, a beautiful left-footed inswinger, giving Merrifield one of the easiest goals of his career, heading home from close range in space at the front post. The Blues were keen to double their lead before the break, with Foxley chasing down Welch as he looked to clear, and Marlow testing the goalkeeper with a dangerous cross. Foxley had a shot from the right hand side take a huge deflection that nearly carried it into the top corner, but it went behind.

HT 1-0

Sunday’s danger-man Greene made a fast start to the second half, and could have had his third goal in as many games with a powerful effort from the left wing, but Welch was equal to it. Sam Robbins won the ball in midfield and passed to Foxley through the middle, he slightly overhit the through ball and forced Merrifield wide and his shot was blocked. The wingers combined for the next chance, with Foxley getting on the end of Greene’s low cross from the left but it was cleared. Merrifield tried to beat the defender with a neat turn, but took a heavy touch from Foxley’s pass and claimed he was tripped in the box, but referee Abigail Byrne disagreed. Brighton’s corner from the right was met by Adam Murray, but his header went over after a late run to the back post, before Murray forced Jack Giddens into a great save – low to his left, he clawed away a powerful volley from the edge of the box, somehow tipping it round the post. From the following corner, the Crows hit the post but the flag was up for offside. With good chances falling for the visitors, it seemed key for the Blues to get a second goal, but it just wouldn’t come as Greene shot wide on his strong foot from 10 yards after good play on the wing by Marlow, and Marlow himself had a shot saved and Merrifield’s rebound was blocked. Murray had another chance to equalise at the other end, this time blazing over the bar from a right-wing cut back. Substitute Josh Williams threatened to score for Royston Town, breaking through the middle but Sam Mvemba showed his pace to make a great recovery and clear the danger. After winning the ball back from a throw-in, Greene played a long ball up to Foxley, but it looked like the chance had gone when his shooting angle was cut down by the defender, before he picked out Merrifield at the back post in space who slotted home through Welch’s legs. Brandon Adams beat Giddens to the ball at the other end, and somehow struck the post while lying down on the touchline. The Blues sealed the win with the final attack of the night, just two minutes after coming off the bench, Davidson ran onto Tom Richardson’s through ball, and from a similar position to where Merrifield got his second, he hit the back of the net through Welch’s legs again – his first of the season.
