BSFC 0-1 Worthing

Bishop’s Stortford 0-1 Worthing Match Report 4/2/20

Bishop’s Stortford suffered a narrow defeat to top-of-the league 10-man Worthing on Tuesday night. In a fixture that was originally scheduled for December but delayed due to a waterlogged pitch, Ricky Aguiar scored the decisive goal for the visitors in the first minute of injury time at the end of the first half, after the Blues had suffered defeat by the same score-line on Saturday when they hosted Wingate and Finchley who prop up the table. Aaron Greene made his 50th Blues appearance on the day that player-manager Jamie Cureton announced his departure from Bishop’s Stortford and joined Hornchurch.

Worthing started the brighter, with Reece Myles-Meekums, Kieron Pamment, Aguiar and Lloyd Dawes testing Fred Burbidge in goal, while the Blues’ only effort in the opening stages was Greene’s long range chip attempt, having seen Carl Rusworth off his line. Greene regularly beat Joel Colbran on the Stortford left, and after getting the right-back booked in the eighth minute, Greene had him beaten all night. Jack Thomas linked up on the edge of the box with Bradley McClenaghan to force a great low save from Rushworth down to his right, before another low cross into a dangerous area by Greene couldn’t be converted. Myles-Meekums tried to chip Burbidge from a tight angle, but the keeper was equal to it, before Aguiar shot wide from a similar position. Debutant Jack Folan shot from range but off target, while a shot from fellow debutant Craig Calver was deflected out for a corner from the edge of the box. Johnville Renee – returning after making 11
appearances earlier in the season – tried to get something on a Greene cross, but he could only loop it up into Rushworth’s arms. Burbidge made a smart save with his legs to deny Pamment from a tight angle, before the follow-up shot was put wide. A better shot by Folan forced Rushworth into a save, and after juggling the loose ball he dived upon it. Calver managed to control a right-wing cross by Renee, but a defender came in quickly to clear before he could shoot. And on the stroke of half-time came the goal, after a corner Aguiar got it onto his right foot and shot low through the crowd into the bottom-left corner.

Half-time 0-1

Greene continued in the second half as he did before the break – beating the full-back and crossing into the middle, he found McClenaghan on the penalty spot but the Leyton Orient loanee saw his shot go wide of the right post. Ross Debrick made a run from left back and was put through on goal by Ryan Henshaw, but he could only drag wide, before Greene picked up the ball in the middle of the pitch, dribbled round two Worthing players and had a shot at goal, but it was straight into Rushworth’s gloves. Renee had a free kick on the edge of the box blocked by the wall, before a low
effort by Greene was blocked for a corner. Substitute Shomari Barnwell headed the ball back across goal from the corner, and Sam Robbins somehow put it wide from close range, before Marvin Armstrong saw his shot clear the stand behind the goal at the other end. Ollie Pearce came off the bench in an attempt to seal the win with another goal, but both of his efforts went wide late on, before Greene couldn’t find Barnwell with a low cross that would have surely seen the match end all square. There was late drama as Jesse Starkey, who had been booked in the first half for a foul on McClenaghan, received his second caution, but Worthing showed their experience to grind out the win, showing why they’re five points clear at the top of the table.
