BSFC 0-1 Leyton Orient

Bishop’s Stortford 0-1 Leyton Orient Match Report 31/8/20

Bishop’s Stortford suffered a narrow 0-1 defeat to Leyton Orient on Bank Holiday Monday. The League Two side scored late on in the first half, with a Trialist netting the only goal of a fairly even contest.

The Trialist who went onto score – wearing the No 10 short for the visitors – had the first effort of the match, as he received the ball with his back to goal and he turned and shot left footed but it was blocked by Ryan Henshaw. Frankie Merrifield saw his cross taken by Sam Sargeant in the Os’ goal, and the keeper was there again when new signing Correy Davidson had a low shot from outside the area. Darren Foxley saw his low cross blocked by Josh Coulson before his corner kick was headed just wide of the near post in an unmarked position. Joe Boachie made a run through the middle and his through ball to Foxley was diverted behind by Coulson, and Foxley took another threatening corner, which Ben Marlow met with his head but couldn’t find the target. Boachie had a outside of the left foot shot saved by Sargeant, before James Dayton released the Blues pressure with a counter attack, but he couldn’t keep the ball in play and conceded a goal kick. Former Blues loanee Shadrach Ogie was involved in the goal, he made a powerful run from left back and found Trialist in the middle for an easy tap in. Joe Widdowson out-muscled Merrifield as he was making a run into the box to prevent the shot, before Merrifield laid it off to Boachie but his effort went wide.

HT 0-1

One of the Orient half-time substitutes was straight into the action, blocking Davidson’s low cross with Merrifield nearby to strike, but Sargeant dived on the loose ball. Merrifield then had a curling effort go wide from the left, and then he misjudged an overhead kick and completely missed the ball, and the follow-up cross was met by Marlow’s head forcing a great diving save from Sargeant. Substitute Tom Richardson nearly scored with his first touch, his header from a corner was saved by Sargeant, and he caught it again from James Baker’s unmarked header at the back post from the next set piece. Richardson picked up the ball on the left and his powerful effort was again saved by Sargeant, before a handball claim was denied by the referee and Richardson could only find Sargeant once more. Louie Johnson, another substitute, made an impact off the bench, first stinging the palms of Sargeant, before dribbling down the right but misplacing his cross. In the last attack of the match, it looked as though Richardson was fouled in the box by an Orient defender, but the referee remained uninterested again.
