Blues 2-0 Horsham

Bishop’s Stortford 2-0 Horsham Match Report 12/10/19

Bishop’s Stortford stopped the rot with a thrilling 2-0 win at home to table-toppers Horsham on National Non-League Day.

After a poor run of results, Jamie Cureton took solo charge of the Blues and guided them to a win, thanks to goals for Jordan Chiedozie and Billy Mycroft-Edwards.

The hosts dominated the first half with Shomari Barnwell – fresh from his four goals in mid-week against Enfield – and Mark Haines repeatedly going close from corners, while at the other end Chris Smith volleyed over and Charlie Harris hit the post and could only head the rebound into Fred Burbidge’s grateful arms.

Alfie Mason was a constant threat down the left, and his set pieces regularly troubled the defence.

After the break, the Blues defended resolutely and restricted the Hornets to long shots, with both goalkeepers in action to keep their sides in the match.

Substitute Lee Harding struck the post for Horsham before Alex Warman scrambled away to Ryan Charles who made a great run through the middle and found Barnwell out wide who forced goalkeeper George Bentley to make a smart save.

From the next attack, Charles got past Dylan Merchant down the right, but his bye-line cutback was scrambled away.

Another chance came and went for Horsham, with substitute Lee Harding striking the base of the right upright before Alex Warman cleared.

Charles, who took over from Mason as set-piece taker, found Chiedozie in the middle who dived to get his head to the ball from close range and ended up finding the back of the net, after Barnwell had missed the near post flick on.

Blues 1-0 Horsham

Charles himself had a chance to double the lead with a shot from a tight angle that went wide, and soon after that he put it on a plate for Mycroft-Edwards, who had made a great run to the back post to power home past Bentley and put the game beyond doubt.

Blues 2-0 Horsham

Fred Burbidge made two smart saves to keep the clean sheet late on, to complete a brilliant performance.

Horsham drop to third in the Bet Victor Isthmian Premier League, while Bishop’s Stortford move to 13th, with the Blues’ next outing on 22 October away to Wingate & Finchley.

A special thank you to the Football League season ticket holders who visited the ProKit UK Stadium for Non-League Day, your attendance and support is much appreciated, and we hope to see you again soon.
