Bishop’s Stortford 4-2 Colchester United Match Report 9/8/22

Bishop’s Stortford ended pre-season with a 4-2 win at home to a Colchester United XI. Ollie Peters netted a brace while Frankie Merrifield and Chris Harris were also on target for the Blues, who begin in the Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division at home to Haringey Borough on Saturday.

Harry Beadle, on loan from Colchester United, came straight into the Stortford starting XI having only been announced on Tuesday afternoon, was early into the action, clearing a loose ball after a block by Mark Haines from Donell Thomas’ shot. Visiting captain Lordon Akolbire shot powerfully from the right side of the box but straight into Jack Giddens’ gloves, before Peters opened the scoring. He reacted well to Ryan Charles’ cross from the left, getting his left foot high to meet the ball to volley into the ground and through a crowd into the net from 15 yards. Peter couldn’t latch on to the return pass after an attempted one-two with Merrifield, but Charles was alive to the situation and fired in a low cross but he couldn’t find a teammate. A long range strike from Peters went high and wide of the goal, and Giddens got down well to deny a Thomas strike. Merrifield then doubled the Blues lead, running in behind the defence and poking past the onrushing goalkeeper from the left side of the box. Terrell Egbri saw a low shot deflected wide after running into the box from his own half, the resulting corner fell to him on the edge of the box but the keeper made a great low save, unsighted as the shot was coming through a crowd. Beadle headed over the bar from a left wing free kick, before Kaan Bennett made a brilliant goal line block covering behind the keeper who had closed down Merrifield, the striker tried a chip but Bennett headed clear. Beadle side-footed towards goal from a left wing corner, but the goalkeeper produced a brilliant reaction saved to palm the shot away and a defender cleared.

HT 2-0

Peters, full of confidence after his superbly taken goal, curled a superb free kick into the bottom corner from 25 yards, but substitute #19 soon reduced the deficit with a perfectly placed chip over Giddens from the edge of the box as Giddens closed him down. Matt Johnson’s long throw from the left came to Beadle at the near post but he headed wide, and Giddens dived on a loose ball with Thomas preparing to shoot. And the visitors got the arrears down to one goal when #7 headed home from close range from a left wing cross. Darren Foxley’s curling effort was tipped over the bar, before his corner went all the way through the crowd and rebounded off the base of the post, with Haines unable to reach his foot out to tap in. Jack Thomas blocked an attempted clearance, with the ball falling kindly to Harris, who dribbled round the keeper and calmly converted the fourth.
