Bishop’s Stortford 3-3 Corinthian Casuals Match Report 5/2/22

Bishop’s Stortford were held to a 3-3 draw at home to Corinthian Casuals on Saturday. The Blues failed to convert leads at 2-0 and 3-1 into three points, with the visitors snatching a late equaliser. Frankie Merrifield, Chris Harris and Ben Marlow were on target for Stortford, while Alfie Bendle scored a brace either side of Keiron Cadogan’s goal.

The Blues opened the deadlock inside the first minute, with Merrifield poking home from close range, following Jonny Giles’ free kick which goalkeeper Emmanuel Agboola parried into a dangerous area. Merrifield looked to double the lead, cutting in off the left he was tackled before he could get a shot away, and Archie Edwards’ cross to Harris was perfect for a header but Agboola saved. Henshaw brought the ball out of the defence and passed to Merrifield who had drifted out to the left. Ryan Charles made a run ahead of him down the left wing and he received the ball from Merrifield, before the winger squared to Harris who calmly converted into the bottom right corner for his sixth goal in his last eight matches. But Bendle reduced the deficit almost immediately, volleying home with a first-time finish from a right wing cross. Skipper Cadogan curled a free kick over the bar and Diallo was flagged offside as he went round Giddens before putting the ball in the net. Charles dragged a low shot wide after cutting in off the right, and Giles saw his free kick curl wide of the top corner.

HT 2-1

Casuals started on the front foot after the break, with Elliott Bolton and Diallo having shots blocked as Ryan Henshaw and Anthony Church provided last ditch blocks to prevent an equaliser. Bendle scuffed a volley effort wide of the target, and at the other end Harris cut the ball back to Merrifield, who saw his shot blocked by Jack Strange. MArlow restored the two goal cushion for the Blues, with a back post header from Giles’ left wing cross, before referee Nathan Oakes awarded Casuals a penalty for Sam Robbins’ foul on Bolton. Both sets of players and coaches seemed equally surprised at the decision, with questions over whether it was a foul or whether it was in the box. After consulting with his assistant, Oakes confirmed it would be a spot kick, which Cadogan dispatched into the left side netting. After making a poor start to the game, Agboola was vital to keeping his team in the match with a number of brilliant saves, he denied Merrifield with a one-on-one save on 18 yards. Giles shot low past the right post and then had a high effort always rising over the crossbar. Henshaw had a header from Giles’ right wing corner tipped over the bar by Agboola, before he denied Harris’ downward header with a full length dive to parry it away, and Henshaw hit the post on the rebound. Emmanuel Mensah curled a right footed effort wide, before Cadogan’s free kick was nodded home by Bendle into the top right corner. Marlow thought he had won a penalty after a tackle inside the box, but the referee immediately dismissed any appeals, and Henshaw’s long shot was always rising over the bar.
