Bishop’s Stortford 3-1 Buxton Match Report 4/11/23

Vanarama National League North

Hamish Arnold

Darren Foxley made two assists on his 150th Bishop’s Stortford appearance and Zain Walker scored his first Blues goal as Steve Smith’s side picked up a first win in nine matches in all competitions at home to sixth-placed Buxton in the Vanarama National League North on Saturday. Tosin Olufemi and Jack Thomas got the other goals in the 3-1 win over a Bucks side who had beaten top of the league Tamworth on Tuesday.

Harry Beadle’s attempted clearance from a lofted pass rebounded off Harrison Sodje on the edge of the box, into the path of Sam Osborne, but Jack Giddens made the save with his feet. Eoin McKeown ran onto a long ball from a Buxton defender, he beat Giddens to the ball but his attempted chip came off the post. After good work down the right from Olufemi, he continued his run into the box and got his head to Gio McGregor’s cross from the right, and found the bottom left corner on the half hour mark. Osborne skied his shot high and wide from a low right wing cross, and Olufemi’s brilliant sliding block denied Zaine Francis-Angol’s cross from the left as the Derbyshire side pushed for an equaliser before the break. Olufemi headed away McKeown’s cross from the right, Sam Minihan picked up the rebound but couldn’t get a shot away before Thomas cleared the danger.

HT 1-0

Osborne’s speculative effort cutting in off the left wing went wide of the right post, before two goals in four second-half minutes increased Bishop’s Stortford’s lead. Thomas’ glancing header found the bottom left corner from Foxley’s free kick, and Foxley provided the through ball for Aldershot Town loanee Walker to slot home from the left side of the box. McGregor, who has been directly involved in five goals in the last six games, saw his shot curl wide from 25 yards, before substitute Aaron Greene picked out Foxley at the far post but he miscued wide on the volley. McKeown pulled a goal back for Buxton, with a downwards header at the far post from a left wing cross, but the Blues held on to the two-goal lead, with Beadle clearing with a diving header from a left wing cross in the six yard box late on, before new signing Joshua Osude was introduced, injecting pace into attack against a tiring defence as Stortford saw out the win.
