Bishop’s Stortford 2-2 Maldon & Tiptree Match Report 16/7/21

Bishop’s Stortford drew 2-2 in their first pre-season friendly against Maldon and Tiptree on Friday night. A Blues trialist scored the first goal, with Jake Cass doubling the lead. The Jammers pulled one back before converting a late equaliser.

The Blues had the better of the first half, with the wingers providing a constant threat whether they were cutting in to shoot or pass, or staying wide to cross. Ryan Charles had a long shot deflected to Gardner who fired wide, before those two combined again, Charles crossing to Gardner who headed wide. Ex-Blue Shomari Barnwell led the line well for the visitors, running in behind as well as coming short to start attacks. He should have opened the scoring but fired against the post from close range having received the ball with his back to goal and turning away from the defender. Charles headed the ball towards Cass in the box, but he could only fire wide, before Jack Giddens was called into action to deny a low effort from the edge of the box. The breakthrough for the Blues came on the end of a swift counter-attack, from the centre circle, Cass played it out wide to Trialist, who skipped past a defender and fired low across the goal from a tight angle. There was almost an instant equaliser when Barnwell beat the offside trap and nearly got past the onrushing Giddens but he miscontrolled the ball and Giddens was grateful to get it in his gloves. Jack Thomas was at his energetic best, pressing Bradley McClenaghan near the corner flag and winning the ball, winning a corner after his shot was parried behind. Charles and Trialist finished the half strongly, both shooting inches wide of the target with left-footed shots.

HT 1-0

Cass got his third goal in three pre-season matches with a free kick, finding a gap between the wall and the post, with the goalkeeper getting nowhere near it. Giddens was down quickly to deny the Maldon & Tiptree #17 from 15 yards, before that player scored from the resulting corner when the Blues failed to clear. James Baker’s miscued clearance fell kindly to the Jammers for a shot but it went over the crossbar. Frankie Merrifield made an impact off the bench at half-time, going close with a half-volley effort, before he could have won a penalty for a push in the back, but play went on as Charley Barker volleyed wide. Giddens preserved the lead once again with a low save from a close range effort after a left wing cut back, before a similar chance was converted by #8, from much closer in after a brilliant run from the right-wing player to create the equaliser.
