Bishop’s Stortford 2-1 Chipstead Match Report

Bishop’s Stortford 2-1 Chipstead Match Report 13/11/21

Bishop’s Stortford progressed to the Second Round of the Buildbase FA Trophy with a 2-1 win at home to Chipstead, extending the unbeaten run to eight games. Darren Foxley and Jonny Giles scored for the Blues in the first half, while Kieran Lavery pulled one back for the visitors in the dying minutes.

After a cagey start to the match, the first chance of note for either side wasn’t until nearly a quarter of an hour in, when Reiss Chandler’s cross was met by Jake Cass, who saw his header parried by visiting goalkeeper Matthew Kerbey, and Ryan Charles’ effort on the rebound was deflected over the bar. Kerbey was on hand to deny Giles’ low shot from the left side of the box after Charles’ through ball, and again Kerbey saved Foxley’s low shot on the turn, initially fumbling the ball but gathering it the second time. The first effort for Chipstead came from Andy Kabuikusomo who could only shoot wide from a tight angle after breaking through the Blues defence. Chandler’s cross to the back post looked too heavy for a teammate to get on the end of, but Cass stuck out a leg and flicked it back into play, where Giles was waiting, but he couldn’t keep his shot down. It looked as though Giles would hit the back of the net with his low shot from the edge of the box, it took a deflection off a defender, wrong-footing Kerbey in goal, though he was fortunate to see the ball hit his arm and trickle past the post for a corner. But in the end it was Foxley who broke the Chipstead resistance, with the winger receiving the ball from Charles’ cushioned pass from a Sam Robbins cross, he slotted home low in the middle of the goal, under Kerbey’s body. And just seven minutes later came the second, with Giles striking a 30 yard free kick into the top corner, with a beautiful curling effort to double the lead before the break. But Chipstead nearly reduced the arrears immediately, with Simeon Dennis beating Jimmy Wallace to the ball near the halfway line, he ran through on goal. Jack Giddens rushed out to close down the angle, with Ben Marlow tracking back and making the tackle, and Wallace atoned for his error by blocking the shot on the rebound.

HT 2-0.

The visitors were energised in the second half, with Rob Kember making a double substitution at the break. Jeremy Boakye saw his free kick narrowly miss the target, Joshua Berry thought he was through on goal after Kabuikusomo’s flick on, but the substitute had strayed offside. Cass forced Kerbey into a low save with a long range shot, before Foxley fired just wide through a crowd of bodies from a right wing cross. Ryan Henshaw and Wallace both saw goalbound headers from corners blocked on the goalline, with the Blues pushing for a third to seal the win in the final 10 minutes. Foxley could only volley over the bar from a left wing cross, before Lavery’s near post header from a corner snuck into the net in the 90 minute, prompting a tense final few minutes. Berry cut in off the left wing but missed the target, and Boakye’s free kick went straight to Giddens, as Chipstead failed to find an equaliser.
