Bishop’s Stortford 1-4 Warrington Town Match Report 21/10/23

Vanarama National League North

Hamish Arnold

A third red card in two games left Bishop’s Stortford’s hopes of ending the losing streak dashed at home to Warrington Town on Saturday in the Vanarama National League North.  Fraser Alexander picked up two yellow cards for the Blues, who lost 1-4 at the RDA Stadium for a fifth consecutive defeat, while Tosin Olufemi saw one penalty saved, but scored from the spot late on, after the Yellows had scored three goals in seven second-half minutes.

New signing Michel Parker nearly began his Blues debut with an own goal, with a backwards header from a long throw-in that went narrowly wide of the far post. Yellows captain Joshua Amis won a header and nodded the ball back to Isaac Buckley-Ricketts whose right-footed half volley curled away from goal and past the right upright. Matthew Grivosti was eased off the ball by Gio McGregor in the Stortford penalty area, but his and his coaches’ appeals for a penalty kick were denied. Grivosti ran on to a long ball from the Warrington defence, goalkeeper Jack Giddens was out quickly to end the attack, but Grivosti took the ball wide, allowing Tosin Olufemi to recover and clear. Amis’ cross field pass was taken well by Buckley-Ricketts, but he took the ball too wide and fired wide from a tight angle. McGregor’s inviting right wing cross was cleared before Zain Walker – deputising as a makeshift striker with Andre Godfrinne and Tobias Braney suspended after red cards last week – could meet the ball with a diving header. Parker’s attempted clearing header went up instead of away from goal, Connor Woods picked up the ball and cut in off the wing, finding the bottom right corner with a left footed shot. Darren Foxley’s low cross from the left wing went through the box, past Parker and Harry Beadle, and Ollie Peter’s shot was deflected from a corner. Foxley cut in from the right wing and curled a shot over the bar, before Walker fouled goalkeeper Daniel Atherton as he tried to reach Alexander’s low cross at the near post. Alexander thought he had equalised, with a shot from 10 yards, but his effort rebounded off the inside of the post and was fouled by Atherton as he did so. Olufemi stepped up for the penalty kick but saw it saved by Atherton, diving to his right.

HT 0-1

Alexander was shown a second yellow card for a foul, with Blues coach Mark Hughes cautioned for protesting that it was a case of mistaken identity, with Darren Foxley the guilty party, who had not already been booked. Atherton’s fingertip save pushed away a left wing cross from McGregor and his defence was able to clear for Warrington Town. A wayward pass in the Yellows midfield was intercepted by Aaron Greene but his shot from a tight angle hit the side netting. Three goals in seven minutes followed for the visitors, with Peters’ pass intercepted by Sean Williams, he passed to Amis who went wide to Woods, who doubled the lead with a low shot across goal into the bottom left corner. He declined the chance of a hat-trick as he ran through onto Buckley-Ricketts’ through ball and squared to Amis for a tap-in into an empty net. Buckley-Ricketts ran on to a through ball and curled low onto the middle of the goal from the left side of the box. He could have scored again but fired high and wide of the target with a curling shot. Olufemi was given a chance to atone for his earlier unconverted penalty with another spot kick after a foul on McGregor. He found the bottom left corner despite Atherton getting a glove to it for a consolation goal.
