Bishops Stortford 1-3 Corinthian Casuals

Bishop’s Stortford 1-3 Corinthian Casuals Match Report 9/11/19

Corinthian Casuals picked up their first league win of the season in a 1-3 win against Bishop’s Stortford.

Bottom of the Bet Victor Isthmian Premier League, Casuals travelled to the ProKit UK Stadium after the Blues had been knocked out of the Herts County Cup at St Albans City on Tuesday.

Two quick goals for the Saints helped them to the win, and Nathaniel Pinney scored a quick-fire brace in the first half for Saturday’s visitors, before Jack Strange added a third after the break and Olly Miles scored a consolation in second half injury time.

The Casuals began on the front foot, having several chances to score from corners, with Alex Warman twice blocking goal-bound efforts on the line and Fred Burbidge making a fine save from Pinney’s shot through a crowd.

But Jamie Cureton dragged his men back into the game, shooting against the post after a one-two with Shomari Barnwell.

After debutant Bradley McClenaghan had shot over on the end of a quick counter-attack, Pinney dribbled through the defence and powered past Burbidge from a tight angle.

Ben Sampayo gave away a soft penalty when he fouled Bradley Wilson on the edge of the box, and Pinney converted from the spot just minutes after his first.

Mathias Bakare had a shot from long range that went wide, before Ryan Henshaw threw his body in the way of Pinney’s shot to deny him the hat-trick from an effort which looked on target after a right wing cutback.

He tried again to get his third, but his chipped from the left wing was misjudged and Fred Burbidge saw it out for a goal kick.

Barnwell had a chance on the stroke of half time, but couldn’t guide Aaron Greene’s cross goal-wards.

Half time 0-2

Greene set the tone for the Blues in the second half, forcing Danny Bracken into a save from a 19-yard free kick low down to his right, which began a purple patch for Bishop’s Stortford, in which they comfortably held possession in the Corinthian Casuals half, with Greene finding some good crosses into the middle, Ben Sampayo shooting from long range and Robbins finding Ryan Charles with a flick on from a corner.

Barnwell created some space for a shooting effort outside the box, his right-foot curled shot could only be parried by Bracken, but Cureton, who was on hand to tap in, was offside.

Robbins made a powerful run from defence, playing in Charles in acres of space on the right, but his cross could find neither Barnwell nor Cureton running in at the back post.

Against the run of play, Strange converted to make it 0-3 from close range after Burbidge had tipped a looping header on to the bar.

Greene forced Bracken into another save from a free kick, before substitute Miles ran through and chipped the keeper, crowning off a much better second half performance with a first goal of the season for the young man.

Full time 1-3
