Bishop’s Stortford 1-0 Margate Match Report 16/10/21

Bishop’s Stortford edged a 1-0 win against Margate in the last home game before three consecutive matches on the road. Substitute Frankie Merrifield’s goal early in the second half was enough to seal the three points, with Archie Jones making way in the first half having suffered an injury.

Like many Blues matches this season, there were plenty of goal chances in the first half but no goal to be found. Jake Cass had the first shot of the match, after Archie Edwards’ run and pass, but Patrick Ohman saved the low effort with his feet. Cass miscued wide with a half-volley from Jones’ right wing cross, and it looked like the number nine would soon break the deadlock. James Bessey-Saldanha turned and struck a low, powerful effort from the edge of the box, but it flashed wide of the post at the other end. Daniel Thompson saw his header go over the crossbar, and Jonny Giles saw his low effort saved by Ohman after a run through midfield. Merrifield saw his header from a right wing cross blocked and cleared off the goal line by a defender, and the Blues finished the half strongly with Ryan Charles and Cass both forcing last-ditch blocks from defenders with powerful shots from 15 yards.

HT 0-0

Johnville Renee initiated the move for the Blues goal, turning defence into attack with a long ball down the right wing for Cass, he chased it down and crossed first time to Merrifield in the middle, who controlled the ball with a brilliant first touch, took it away from two defenders and calmly placed it beyond Ohman into the bottom left corner. Cass could have doubled the lead with a great turn and shot from the edge of the box, only to be denied by a great block from a defender. The Gate nearly equalised in the most remarkable fashion, as Jack Giddens rushed out to tackle Thompson, that left an open goal which Ben Greenhalgh attempted to find from near 40 yards, he hit the post from that distance and Bessey-Saldanha should have found the target with the rebound but skied his shot. Renee found Giles with a cutback from the right wing to the edge of the box, but his low shot towards the bottom corner was saved well by Ohman, and Bessey-Saldanha’s curling effort went wide. Renee had a great chance to get his first goal since returning to the club, but he couldn’t find the target from a tight angle on the end of a counter-attack led by Merrifield. The Blues huffed and puffed but couldn’t make sure of the win late on with a second goal, despite a pair of brilliant crosses from the right by Giles, firstly just missing the runs of Cass and Church at the back post, and then Merrifield who attempted to head home after a late run into the box.
