Bishop’s Stortford 1-0 Kingstonian Match Report 12/11/22

Bishop’s Stortford got back to winning ways with a hard fought 1-0 victory at home to Kingstonian on Saturday. The Blues suffered a first defeat in 12 games at the hands of Canvey Island a week ago, but picked up three points against the Ks thanks to Ollie Peters’ first half strike. Stortford climb one place to second in the Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division, with Hornchurch losing to Aveley, while Potters Bar Town went top with a win over Bowers & Pitsea.

Jonny Giles’ left wing corner to the back post was headed clear, Harry Beadle managed to keep it alive and Ryan Henshaw half-volleyed wide. Kingstonian – who lost 5-2 at Haringey Borough in midweek – had a free kick near the corner of the 18-yard box on the right of centre, Nodirbek Bobomurodov took it and curled it around the wall towards the bottom right corner but Jack Giddens saved. Kieron Cadogan controlled the ball with his back to goal, turned in space and shot, but Beadle had closed him down and made a crucial block. Brandon Adams – making his home debut and first start for the club – ghosted in behind the defence and won a corner after his low shot was saved. Iker Noguera Leon’s corner from the right was flicked at the near post by Cadogan but into Giddens’ arms, then Noguera Leon had a shot of his own, falling over in the box as he fired, with the effort going wide. Peters’ goal was worthy of winning any match, Ryan Charles’ left wing cross was headed away, but only to the midfielder on the edge of the box, hitting a scissor-kick volley into the bottom left corner. Kwesi Ntim dribbled through the Blues half and set up Lee Lewis for a first time strike, but he could only fire straight at Giddens. Charles nicked the ball away from Michael Abnett and quickly fed the ball through to Adams, but he couldn’t sort his feet out to get a shot away on the stroke of half time.

HT 1-0

Henshaw deflected a low strike from Geneiro Maragh wide of the goal with Giddens unmoved, and substitute Frankie Merrifield ran through down the left wide and forced Sam Jackson into a fine diving save with a shot from a tight angle. Kingstonian pushed for an equaliser, and Stortford couldn’t kill the game with a second goal. Lewis fired wide from long range, and Maragh also couldn’t find the target from outside the box. Into second half injury time and Maragh went close again, before the best chance of the half fell to Donell Thomas off the bench, Charles’ cut back to him was perfect but his team-mate Merrifield inadvertently blocked the goalbound effort, before himself firing wide from the second effort.
