Match Report

Bishop’s Stortford 1-2 Kingstonian Match Report 1/1/20

Bishop’s Stortford began January with a 1-2 defeat at home to Kingstonian on New Year’s Day.

Without a game since the 10th December due to two waterlogged pitches, the Blues lost their first match of the new decade, against the team they had beaten convincingly in the reverse fixture on August Bank Holiday Monday.

Reece Hall and Sean Clohessy scored either side of the break, with Jamie Cureton’s late penalty a mere consolation.

The Blues started slowly, and for the first period of the match looked like a side lacking sharpness and practice.

Ex-Blue Louie Theophanous had a good chance to open the scoring early on, but the Blues managed to scramble away after the striker had made some space for a shot inside the box.

The Ks took advantage, dominating the early stages with Hall going close with the outside of the boot shot from the edge of the box.

David Manu gave the home fans something to shout about with a run down the right, he recovered from being tackled and shot at goal from a tight angle, when maybe the better option was to cut it back to Shomari Barnwell who was waiting in the middle.

Debutant Lawrence Hammond dribbled through the defence, with Harry Osborne clearing the danger after a half-hearted handball appeal from Blues’ players and fans.

As he so often does, Ryan Henshaw won the aerial battle off an Alex Warman free kick, but it went wide of the target.

From the next free kick, Jayden Sweeney found Barnwell’s head from inside his own half, but no team-mate was gambling and Rob Tolfrey claimed the loose ball.

There was controversy surrounding the opening goal, with Manu fouled in the build-up in the centre circle, Kingstonian broke and forced a corner – when it should have been a goal kick.

Hall struck from long range, beating Burbidge with a curling effort on the edge of the box after the corner, and such was his disappointment with the refereeing, skipper Henshaw was booked for his protests.

Jack Thomas had a great chance for an equaliser, volley from the edge of the box after the ball was scrambled away from the box, with Tolfrey rooted, the ball went just wide of the post.

Half time 0-1

Clohessy doubled the visitors’ lead with the first chance after the break.

Alfie Mason misjudged the bouncing ball, and Clohessy volleyed across goal from the right channel and into the bottom corner.

It should have been three moments later, with Kingstonian breaking after a Blues corner, they found themselves with three in behind the defence with just Fred Burbidge to beat, but somehow Hall couldn’t find the target.

Substitute Mark Haines played a beauty of a through ball into Barnwell’s path as his first involvement with the game, but Tolfrey was out well to prevent a shot.

Osborne made a last ditch tackle to deny a shot for Manu, before Burbidge saved a shot at the other end and Jordan Wescott managed to clear.

Manu made a great run to the bye-line, and after beating the defender who was trying to shepherd the ball out for a corner, Clohessy was on hand to deny the tap-in with a sliding clearance.

After Burbidge made a good save to prevent a third goal, Manu was fouled near the bye-line for a certain penalty, and despite Cureton sending Tolfrey the wrong way to score from the spot – his
seventh goal in his last seven games – there wasn’t enough time for an equaliser.

Full time 1-2
