Takeley 1-3 Bishop’s Stortford Match Report 16/7/22
Bishop’s Storford’s pre-season campaign got underway with a 1-3 win at Takeley. New signings Tosin Olufemi, Matt Johnson and Terrell Egbri started the match, before academy players Harrison Crowther and Josh Demetriou made second half appearances.
Darren Foxley’s free kick from the left wing was met by captain Ryan Henshaw as he jumped highest in the box, but he couldn’t keep the header on target. Foxley then tried his luck with a strike from 25 yards, but it didn’t curl enough to trouble the Takeley goalkeeper. Frankie Merrifield headed wide from Archie Edwards’ cross and a long throw from Johnson bounced through the six yard box with no teammate able to make contact for a tap-in. Jack Thomas squared the ball to Egbri but an unfortunate bounce meant he couldn’t provide the finishing touch. Despite all the early Blues chances it was the Essex Senior League side who took the lead, when a mix up between Mark Haines and Jack Giddens allowed the number 9 to run through and slot home into the empty net. Egbri crossed to Thomas in the box but the keeper came out bravely to catch the high ball. Egbri then netted the equaliser, cutting in off the right, he drilled the ball low into the bottom right corner from 20 yards. And after the drinks break, Merrifield gave the BLues the lead, from Edwards’ cross near the left side corner flag, he took a touch to control it and volleyed home from close range. Egbri couldn’t find the target when he aimed for the top corner from a similar position to his goal, with this effort going high and wide.
Johnson’s free kick rebounded off the crossbar from the edge of the box, for a foul on Edwards that was originally awarded as a penalty. Chris Harris headed over the bar from a left wing cross and Jonny Giles pulled his shot wide from the edge of the box. Johnson made a smart turn in the box to beat the full back but missed the target from a tight angle. Harris dribbled past the keeper and attempted to chip the ball over the defender from a wide position but shot wide. A low fizzing cross from Giles went in to Charles, who stabbed home from close range. The Takeley keeper made a great low save with his feet to deny Charles a second, with a powerful strike from the edge of the box he parried it wide. From the resulting corner, Church headed back across goal and Charles nodded towards goal but flashed it wide, before a strike from the edge of the box from Charlie Allum was saved by the keeper.
