Margate 0-1 Bishop’s Stortford Match Report 12/2/23

Hamish Arnold

Bishop’s Stortford got back to winning ways with a battling 0-1 victory at Margate on Saturday. The Blues maintain their position at the summit of the Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division, with Chris Harris scoring his first goal since returning to the club.

Ryan Charles – fresh from his first goal of the season on Tuesday night – looked close the breaking the deadlock inside 10 minutes with a great leap and header to meet Darren Foxley’s right wing cross, but it drifted narrowly wide. Harris crossed low from the right to Foxley at the near post, and he tried to glance it in with a deft flick, but Margate were able to clear. Daniel Jinadu was down smartly to his right to parry Foxley’s low and powerful shot from a tight angle, and he grasped the ball before the rebound could be converted. New loan signing Lordon Akolbire slotted straight in at right back, and was praised the the Blues player of the match by manager Steve Smith after the game, and it was his low cross from the right that provided the first goal, it was half-cleared by Sinn’Kaye Christie as he stuck out a leg, but it fell kindly to Harris who shot first time into the bottom right corner from 15 yards.

HT 0-1

Ollie Peters saw his first time shot saved from Charles’ cut back to the edge of the box, Peter Ojemen pulled on the shirt of Charles as he was running on to a through ball and bearing down on goal, with some of the travelling faithful wanting a red card for denial of a goalscoring opportunity, but it was only yellow. The resulting free kick looked destined for the top right corner from Peters, but Jinadu made the save. Nathan Wood had a promising free kick opportunity at the other end, but couldn’t find the target, and captain Ben Greenhalgh sliced high and wide from a low right wing cross, when he had time and space to control the ball and place it for a potential equaliser. Foxley sliced a shot wide of the left post, and Charles dragged a low shot wide  after smartly controlling a fizzed low cross by Jay Porter from the left wing. Frankie Merrifield came off the bench late on – for his 150th Blues appearance – and his low pass was flicked by Foxley, who turned and volleyed towards goal from 30 yards, but the dipping effort went wide.
