Herne Bay 0-5 Bishop’s Stortford Match Report 22/4/23

Hamish Arnold

2022-23 Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division Champions Bishop’s Stortford rounded off the season with a 0-5 victory over relegated Herne Bay on Saturday. The Blues had been confirmed as winners on Tuesday night, when Canvey Island failed to beat Aveley, but finished the season with a seventh consecutive win, with six clean sheets in that run. It equalled Stortford’s biggest win of the season, with five different goalscorers.

Ben Marlow’s strike in the first minute was blocked, and the subsequent corner from Jonny Giles was defended. Donell Thomas’ low left footed strike was curled into goalkeeper Jordan Perrin’s arms. Lordon Akolbire’s cross from the right was too high for Chris Harris in the middles, before Mason Saunders-Henry’s left footed effort went high and wide of the goal. Marlow opened the scoring with a back post header across goal from Jay Porter’s left wing cross. Donnell Anderson might have equalised when he beat Jack Giddens to a high cross, but the keeper dived on the loose ball in his six-yard box. Jack Parter’s long range strike was too high, before S Deering slid a through ball into Thomas in the left channel, stinging the palms of Perrin with a low shot. Just moments after being denied, Thomas had his name on the score sheet, when Deering’s free kick was headed down by Matt Johnson and the striker calmly slotted home in space in front of goal.

HT 0-2

Marcel Barrington’s low shot from the left side of the box was pushed away by Giddens and cleared by Johnson, before Tosin Olufeni’s fizzed cross from the right was stabbed home by Deering in the middle. Giles scored the pick of the goals with a 25 yard rocket into the right side of the goal on the hour mark, and six minutes later, Frankie Merrifield scored off the bench from Thomas’ left wing cut back. Thomas curled wide from the edge of the box, before Giles’ strike from range was saved by Perrin. Merrifield’s strike was blocked into the path of Mark Haines, but the defender couldn’t hit the target from 20 yards. Despite not being called upon frequently, Giddens still produced a superb save to preserve his clean sheet, getting down low to his left to deny a powerful strike from Mike West. Merrifield fired narrowly wide of the post after a one-two with Foxley, trying to side-foot home with a first-time finish.
