Brackley Town 1-0 Bishop’s Stortford Match Report 15/8/23

Hamish Arnold

Brackley Town handed the Blues a first league defeat in 10 matches at St James Park on Tuesday night, ending Bishop’s Stortford’s unbeaten return in the first two games back at Step Two in the Vanarama National League North. Danny Newton scored the only goal of the match in the second half, with the Isthmian League Premier Division champions sitting on four points from three matches.

Chris Regis – starting the game in midfield with George Sykes making his first start of the season – win the ball high up the pitch and slid it through to Ryan Charles on the left wing, his low cross was met at the near post by Sykes who tried a backheel flick but he put it wide. Jack Morrell saw his 25 yard shot blocked, the rebound fell to Darren Foxley whose effort was deflected over the bar for a corner by Saints captain Gareth Dean. Charles ran onto a long ball from the Stortford defence, but dragged the low shot wide of the right post. Jordon Crawford cut in off the left wing and curled a right footed shot towards goal from the edge of the box, Jack Giddens parried the ball but only pushed it into the path of Cosmas Matwasa but he fired wide. Rob Howard nicked the ball in midfield in the Brackley half and passed to Sykes who dribbled into the box, the striker passed back to Howard and he found Foxley with a square pass, but he curled wide from the edge of the D. Shepherd Murombedzi’s low shot from Alfie Bates cut back was brilliantly saved at close range by Giddens, and the rebound shot from Crawford was superbly blocked by Ollie Peters. Sykes intercepted an errant Brackley throw-in and passed to Foxley, but his strike was right at Danny Lewis who saved. Ayo Shogbeni saw his back post header from a free kick cleared off the line but he was flagged offside.

HT 0-0

Charles headed wide at the back post from a left wing cross, and Ryan Henshaw headed against the post in a similar position from a wide Foxley free kick. From a long throw, the ball was flicked on at the near post and Newton glanced the ball into the bottom corner for Brackley to take the lead.  Newton nearly doubled the lead a minute later, with a flying volley from a left wing cross, he stretched to make contact but Giddens gratefully received the ball. Ola Ogunwamide came off the bench and dribbled down the right wing, his left footed shot went over the bar. Morrell’s deflected cross fell into Howard’s path, he took a a touch and shot but didn’t find the target.
