Blues 1-2 Peterborough Sports

Bishop’s Stortford suffered a narrow home defeat in the FA Cup against Peterborough Sports, thanks to two tap-in goals.
At this stage of the competition for the first time in six years, the Blues had the first good chance to score in the match when Shomari Barnwell headed wide from Aaron Greene’s cross to the back post.
But it was the Turbines who opened the scoring, Cameron Johnson converting from close range inside 10 minutes, after the Blues failed to clear from a corner.
It may well have been two soon afterwards but for Chris Gregan – making his second debut for the Blues on loan from Chelmsford City – at left back making a good recovery run to block the cross and then prevent the corner.
Greene had a shot blocked before Ryan Charles headed wide after a Gregan long throw and another long throw was knocked down by Barnwell but no one was on hand to convert, after Ryan Henshaw made a brilliant sliding block to deny a Josh McCammon strike.
In the last attack of the first half, Jamie Cureton struck a long range free kick that didn’t trouble Lewis Moat.

Soon after the break, Mark Jones had a chance to double the lead for the visitors when Dion Sembie-Ferris – who played for St Neots Town when they won at home to the Blues in the FA Cup first qualifying round last season – had put the front man through on goal.
The Blues’ goal came from the spot after the break, with Dan Bucciero adjudged to have handled the ball from Jamie Cureton’s cross, and Shomari Barnwell converted from the spot as he did in the last round.
Substitute Josh Moreman had a header and a side-footed finish both somehow avoiding the target from about a yard out within minutes of each other – both chances that looked easier to score than miss.
Much like the Turbines first goal, it was a scramble in the box that led to the eventual winner, with Sembie-Ferris on hand to convert after a knock down from Lewis Hilliard’s halfway line free kick.
Despite a late cross by Greene that threatened to loop under the bar, Peterborough Sports will be in the hat for the next round of the FA Cup, while the Blues return to league action away to Hornchurch on 28 September.
