Bishop’s Stortford 3-3 Biggleswade Town Match Report

Bishop’s Stortford 3-3 Biggleswade Town Match Report 16/9/23

Emirates FA Cup Second Qualifying Round

Hamish Arnold

Despite leading the game three times, Biggleswade Town were forced to settle for a replay against Bishop’s Stortford after a 3-3 draw at the RDA Stadium in the Emirates FA Cup Second Qualifying Round. Jonathan Lacey scored a hat-trick for the Pitching In Southern League Division One Central side, but the Waders were pegged back by Billy Cracknell, Tobias Braney and Ryan Charles.

Ola Ogunwamide – one of five changes to the starting XI from the team that beat Darlington last Saturday for Bishop’s Stortford – started the game brightly with a curling and dipping shot that narrowly missed the top left corner from the right side of the box. Braney fizzed a cross from the right side of the box but it was too powerful for George Sykes in the middle, before Jack Berman reacted brilliantly to deny Braney’s header from Darren Foxley’s cross from the left. Jack Giddens produced a great reaction save to deny Harry Draper’s downwards header, pushing the ball onto the post before Liam Brooks hit the crossbar from five yards out with the whole goal to aim for, had he hit the target it would have been disallowed for offside. From a similar position to his last save, Berman denied Ogunwamide’s header from Foxley’s cross, tipped over the bar for a corner which Biggleswade Town defended well. Lacey opened the scoring on 20 minutes, volleying home from 15 yards after Draper knocked down a long ball to his strike partner. But Cracknell equalised on the half hour mark, rising highest to head home from Foxley’s right wing corner. Peterborough United loanee Aaron Powell gave the ball away in the Blues defensive third, and tried to atone for his error by winning the ball back, but gave a penalty away for a foul on Draper, which Lacey slotted home into the bottom right corner. Lacey could have netted his third before half time, but curled over the bar, and Draper’s shot from Marcus Gouldbourne’s lwo cross was blocked for a corner on the stroke of half-time.

HT 1-2

Tosin Olufemi and Charles came off the bench at half-time with the right back providing a cross soon after his introduction to Braney, but Berman beat him to the ball at the near post. Braney then pounced on a misplaced backwards header by the defender, to volley home from 12 yards for his first Bishop’s Stortford goal. Draper fired over the bar after the ball fell to him from a Biggleswade Town free kick, and Liam Brooks saw his low shot saved at Gidden’s feet. Lacey completed his hat-trick just after the hour mark, when he was left in space at the back post from Cole DaSilva’s left wing corner, firing home into the bottom left corner of the net. Gouldbourne latched onto a through ball on the left wing but fired over the bar from the left side of the box. Charles’ header was blocked on the goal-line from Foxley’s cross, with Blues fans behind the goal appealing for handball against the Biggleswade defender, but Charles was flagged for offside anyway. Jack Thomas came off the bench and introduced his usual energy and intensity into the match, urging the team for an equaliser. He was close to getting the third goal, forcing a great save from Peter corner on the left, before Charles made no mistake at the back post, netting his fourth of the season. Thomas nearly won the match in second half injury time, Foxley’s free kick on the right was cleared as far as Peters on the left, he crossed into the middle where Thomas headed against the crossbar and over from four yards out.
