Bishop’s Stortford 3-0 Corinthian Casuals Match Report 4/2/23

Hamish Arnold

Bishop’s Stortford’s fourth consecutive win saw the Blues stay at the top of the Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division. Stortford also kept a third clean sheet in a row in a 3-0 win at home to relegation-threatened Corinthian Casuals. Darren Foxley scored a brace either side of Frankie Merrifield’s goal, with new signing Sam Deering making his debut for the club. There was also a return from injury for Ben Marlow, who was introduced as a substitute for his first appearance of the season.

Donell Thomas chipped the ball in from the right early on, but Foxley’s half-volley effort was put wide. Making a run down the left, Foxley cut in and was fouled by Sergio Uyi, the winger then stepped up and curled the ball into the bottom left corner in the sixth minute, past a despairing Callum Coulter, who was banking on the right-footed Deering taking aim. Matt Johnson’s header from Giles’ left wing corner was powerful but too high, and Chris Harris’ low cross was stabbed goalwards by Thomas but saved by Coulter. Deering soon grew into the game, chopping in off the right and curling a left footed effort just wide of the far post.

HT 1-0

Johnson’s close control and pass led to Foxley’s powerful shot, but it went narrowly wide. Nathaniel Pinney dummied the ball into Sam Dowridge’s path, but Johnson anticipated the shot well and made the block. Henshaw flicked the ball over the bar with a header from Johnson’s long throw, and Uyi headed against the crossbar from a corner. Thomas took the ball too wide from Harris’ through ball, and couldn’t hit the target from a tight angle. It looked set up to be a nervy finish for the Blues, unable to increase their lead against a resolute defensive unit, but the introduction of Merrifield soon eased the tension. Foxley’s free kick hit the wall, Thomas kept it alive and passed to Anthony Church, and he flicked the ball into Merrifield’s path, who took a touch and slammed home from a tight angle. Henshaw was required to head away a dangerous inswinging cross from the left at the near post that may have crept into the net, before going close to getting on the scoresheet at the other end, with a downward header from Ollie Peters’ free kick, but Coulter pushed it away. Another free kick from a wide left position was won again by Henshae in the air, he nodded it back across goal for Foxley to convert with a diving header, in the dying seconds of injury time.
